After nearly a decade of fighting at middleweight, boxer Kelly Pavlik has decided to leave that weight division and fight at a higher class, his trainer, Jack Loew, said Monday evening.
Pavlik made the decision Monday afternoon after discussion with Loew and his co-managers Cameron Dunkin and Mike Pavlik Sr.
Pavlik, who has struggled to make the 160-pound limit for his last few fights, could fight at super middleweight (168) or even light heavyweight (175), Loew said.
Pavlik lost his WBC and WBO middleweight titles on April 17 in a unanimous decision loss to Sergio Martinez.

People will say Pav doesn't want to fight Martinez again, but I commend PAv since his health might be at stake making 160...

I find it uninteresting that he is leaving... we all know this.

The interesting this is whether he wants to fight at 168 or 175.

The right decision. His career may not be a total write off. He should take one or two easy fights to test the water.

Pavlik should take a tune up at 168lbs and then fight Bute.

That's the only significant fight out there for him right now above 160lbs.

He can try to get Stieglitz to defend his title against him but there just might not be enough money in the world to get Stieglitz to fight anyone good ever again.

His ass is finished, 168 is chuck full of talent, and if he goes up to LHW Dawson will whoop that ass all day & night.

I agree, I stated that in an earlier thread.

Stieglitz isn't fighting ANYONE with a pulse, so it's got to be Bute-Pavlik.

Soon the news will be "Pavlik to leave boxing". Story should have been "Pavlik leaves Youngstown" and "Pavlik leaves Jack Lowe". What a waste.

Prime Pav is a tough fight for anyone, though I'd give some 168ers the advantage. He needs to get his hunger for the fight game back.

Move up to 175, take care of business vs a couple of bums while ad******g to the weight, perhaps pick up a belt if that goes well, and get one last big fight vs Dawson before it's time for retirement. I don't think Kelly's got more than 5 fights left in him, tops, as it is.

Dude's really between a rock and a hard place. I don't see another title in his future.
