Pavlik's resume is no doubt a lot better than Martinez's. That said, Martinez is far better than his resume indicates, and it's a very bad style matchup for Pavlik. Pavlik's offensive game is too predictable and the speed/skill difference between the two is huge. I expect at best Pavlik will win by a come from behind stoppage if he's able to slow Martinez down late, but Kelly might end up looking pretty silly in there on this one.

what troubles kelly in the ring has been droned on about ad nauseum...but what about what troubles martinez in the ring? what has been shown over the course of his career to give him trouble?

how about pressure/volume fighters who just don't stop? sound familiar? sound a little like kelly? sergio was knocked out by one ten years ago and was worn down badly 10 years later and beaten again. he fought the same in both fights and has fought the same all 10 years in between. i cannot stress that enough. he has fought the same his whole career.

now all of a sudden volume and pressure from a bigger fighter doesnt bother sergio? how is that? i fail to see how this is going to be easy for sergio when he's shown throughout his career that volume and pressure from a strong come forward guy gets to him.

I recongnize that Kelly has the better resume between the two, But I'm looking at the style match-up. I favor Martinez, because Pavlik just looks very flat footed at times and slow. Sure Pavlik can turn the fight around or end it with one punch, but if Martinez comes in well trained, it's going to be hard for Kelly to get a good flush one on him.

Pavlik's overall resume is better than Sergio's...I mean of course. That's not debatable is it? I mean that's kind of a known fact. The only argument I could see is that Sergio's last 3 opponents are better than Pavlik's and that makes SOME sense.

Alex Buenema, Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams vs Bernard Hopkins, Mustache Antonio Rubio and Miguel Espino

The point of my original post was pretty simple. Experience counts. Especially experience against decent opposition. I'll give a few examples.

Zuniga likes to swarm his opponents. He likes to move in quickly, throw punches in bunches, and move back out, much like Martinez. He is not a better fighter than Martinez, but he moves in behind a good jab, and throws punches and defends on the way out. Martinez does not do those things as well Zuniga does. Furthermore, Zuniga has WAY more fire power than Martinez.

Martinez has many huge holes in his defense. McKart, Rubio, Thompson, and JT in the rematch all showed way better defense than Sergio shows.

The speed factor is an obvious issue. However, Martinez isn't any faster than Jermain Taylor was at 160.

On the level of physical strength this fight is a mismatch. Kelly Pavlik has probably fought 20 or more opponents who were bigger and stronger than Martinez.

Lots of quick movement could be a problem for Pavlik, but Martinez uses a lot of foollish movement, especially circling the wrong way. Ross Thompson was bigger, stronger, smarter, and a hell of a lot trickier than Martinez.

The southpaw stance is a disadavantage in this one. A good right hand is a southpaw's worst enemy. At some point Martinez will circle the wrong way, and run right into a bomb. Probably more than once if he's tough enough to take the first one.

At the end of the day, if we base a pre-fight analysis on facts, rather than a desire to see Pavlik lose, we simply must conclude that Sergio Martinez is not bringing anything to the ring that Pavlik hasn't effectively dealt with in the past.

Martinez on the other hand has never dealt with a big, strong, tough, stalker like Pavlik. This is a guy who can hit an opponent to the head or the body, with either hand, and change his life forever. Martinez has never been anywhere near a guy like that.

Martinez resumé from an official perspective is terrible. Well done. Doesn't justify Pavlik's though, which is still relatively weak. And he's a far better fighter than his resumé credits him for.

As a neutral I will be rooting for the underdog on this one. However my money would be on a Pavlik stoppage unless Martinez gets on his bike.
I can't see Martinez fighting any meaningful fights after 2010. I imagine this would be his last year and the KP fight could even retire him early.
If he stands and trades that is.
