Poor guy doesn't do well in clinches. Imagine if he had to face Hopkins @ 160 years ago...

yes but this sort of softened the blow of the hopkins loss for kelly. he got straight mollywhopped in there but at least he could go back down and still have his belts...

but as you pointed out its different w/ sergio considering how he's coming into the pav fight.

you're right, its risky for sergio as well.

i almost felt bad for him in there. on occassion, he literally dropped his hands in the clinch when he saw the ref make a move to sort of get into position to seperate the fighters if he had to.

To be fair, I feel like a large majority of the European fighters struggle when it comes to things like clinches.

Here's a thought. What's to say Pavlik doesn't wind up getting knocked down? I mean Sergio has some underrated power and fast hands. We've seen Pavlik is susceptible to punches he's not expecting and HAS been hurt by those punches outta nowhere. It's certainly possible that Martinez could wind up landing a significant punch and winds up putting him down.

very well could happen. kelly has been down so you can't say it won't happen. he was down against zuniga but zuniga could really bang. wasnt elite by anymeans but was a tough sob.

Yeah Zuniga has power at the very least. I'm looking more at guys like Taylor and even Hopkins, guys who surprised Kelly and put him in a bad spot due to how crisp and out of the blue his shots were.

Taylor just wasn't a great finisher and used up all of his energy. Had he toke his time he might've gotten Kelly outta there a few rounds or maybe a round later.

"wasn't elite by any means" sums up nearly all of Pavlik's competition to this point. He's got one of the worst resumes of any standing champion. And all his fans talk as if he's a beast because he's knocked-out a lorry-load of bums. It's very amusing.

Fact: He's faced just two 'elite'-ish fighters. The one known for tiring got caught late on. The other -- a forty-three year old -- beat him like a ****ing snare drum.

None of us are over-rating Sergio; we're just trying to inject a dose of reality into the wild proclamations of the Pavlickers. This could go either way.

I have to agree with you there! JT was gassed by the end of the round and never was able to get a second wind!!!

i agree. i'm a huge jermain taylor fan...but its a shame all that potential went partially unfulfilled. literally seconds away from finishing kelly and holding on to beat froch. that's gotta be tough on him to think about.
