The keys to beating Pavlik are fast hands, really good power, intelligent footwork, really good defense, physical strength, stamina, a ton of heart, and a great chin. And then an opponent must put all that together with a sensible fight plan, and the ability to execute that plan. Martinez has the heart and the speed. He does not have the other tools.
Credit to Kelly for fighting him, both PWill and Sturm are style wise better for him. Sergio, UD. Sergio, clearly beat him, and anybody that watched the fight knows that.
Not clearly and that fight could've gone to either way. I felt Martinez didn't do enough in the last rounds and scored te fight 115-113 Williams. Not a robbery and depends on how you scored the close rounds.
Martinez does not have technically sound defense. He relies on speed and athleticism. Paul Williams is very sloppy. He rarely lands more than 24% in a given round. He landed 33% over all against Martinez, somewhere near a career high connect rate. Sergio does not keep his hands up. If an opponent does not keep his hands up against Pavlik, he is going to get hit with the double-jab/right hand, and the left hook from outside, repatedly, and that is never good news.
Agreed that he has defense but is not technically sound and has a bad habit to keep his hands down. They're always on his hip and that's suicide when facing a power puncer like Pavlik.
All you need is a good game plan to beat Pavlik! Hopkins was never known for speed, power or even stamina(JC vs Bhop). There are guys on ESB forums trying to make Pavlik seem like some "mule punching beast" but in reality he is not!
Here is a bit of trivia for ya all. It's certainly not the end all/be all, but it's food for thought. In fights at 160, scheduled for 8 or more rounds, Kelly Pavlik's KO ratio is 100%. That includes 7 opponents who had never been stopped before.
watch it again. The right fighter won the fight. That's why I hated that 119-110 scorecard so much, because it took so much away from what P actually accomplished in that fight.
William's leftovers? You mean the guy who gave PW a beating a few months back? Who's running from who? ... Williams isn't talking much all of sudden. 50/50 split? I don't think so. :blood
No he didn't. It was a close fight that could have went either way. It sure as hell, wasn't a robbery, just because one judge has a shitty card doesn't mean that it was a robbery. It could have been Williams or Martinez by one or two points or a draw.
The goofy score card created most of the controversy. The fight itself looked like a two part affair. Martinez was getting low on fuel by the end of the 4th. By the end of the 6th he was backing up in straight lines, and had slowed down a lot. Paul kept the pressure on and looked better in the last half.
