Cobbler Yoda feels he can still question Kelly's chin, thats all. He never said it was weak, just that it is still questionable. He must have high standards for labeling chins "near granite". Please explain Cobbler Yoda.
Yeah, of course. Isn't that the way we usually judge fighters? :? The more opponents they fight, the more proven those opponents are and the more different challenges they face, the more certain we are about the conclusions we draw about them. How the **** do you think it works?
I've only seen it once and my memory is none too good. How was Miranda doing until he got KO'd, how much was he catching Pavlik?
I agree with your logic, but Pavlik has already proven his chin to us, thats all. Apparently, you still need some evidence to sway you one way or the other. We dont need to see him take bombs from Kessler and Abraham, that would just be gravy.
Proved his chin? Taylor almost had him out and McKart put him on the canvas. He took some good shots against Miranda, but Miranda was forced to fight going backwards most of the fight(which reduced his power), and he fought with one hand; loading up that right constantly. It's a lot easier to take shots when you know what's coming. Kelly's chin isn't weak, but it isn't granite or near granite.
Those three would seem most relevant to judgements about his abilities in the class that he is now in? And, as I said, I'm not judging at all. I'm reserving judgement as I don't think I've seen enough yet. The people posting that Pavlik has a 'granite' or 'near-granite' chin are making firm judgements and by and large they do seem to be doing it on the basis of those three fights. Maybe you should redirect the question to them?
Not to mention that Zuniga is a hell of a puncher as well. Granite is a bit of a hyperbole, but he has an above-average chin, and he's always been able to get back up and win. I doubt most people would have been able to compose themselves quickly enough to not get KOed by the blow he received from Taylor.
The plan for Pavlik was to press Miranda because they claimed his weakness was going backwards. That worked because Miranda does not know how to punch off the backfoot. Because of that, he was allowing himself to be a standing target, planting his feet and throwing punches, especially when he was on the ropes. I think he was getting power on those shots. Miranda can't fight on the backfoot because he doesn't know how to move around and still throw hard shots. However, in this fight he was not moving around. He was stationary and because of that, they were strong punches. Maybe not as hard as they would of been had he been moving forward and getting his whole body behind them, but at the same time, he wasn't going backwards that often. I think Pavlik has a good chin. He messed up against Taylor because he underestimated his power - In fact the punch which really hurt him was when he was sticking is tongue out at taylor saying "Those punches are not bothering me!". That happens so often in boxing. You could look at Lennox Lewis clearly looking towards the crowd, clowning right before rahman landed that huge right hand. Ali messing about with Joe Frazier in their first fight, when he almost went down. Even James Toney was stunned when Jones hit him on the chin. Why? Because he was messing about. granted he was quite off balance too, but that shot hurt him. It happens in boxing. If you underestimate the power of the other guys punches, you can get hurt, even if he is percieved as a weak puncher. If you want to base the idea that Kelly Pavlik can't take a punch because of what Jermain Taylor did to him, it should also be noted that Pavlik was only hurt once in 19 rounds against Taylor. That one time, like I said, he was playign around and paid the price.
Haha what Kelly Pavlik have you been watching ? He's been put down 3 times by bums and once by Taylor who couldnt punch his way out of a paper bag. To say his chin is near granite is ignorance of the highest level. I disagree with the original post that he's a one-trick poney, however, Pavlik is STUPIDLY overated on this forum. He's got decent attributes like good work rate, good power, good stamina. And all the fights I have seen him in have been exicitng fights so lets get him credit for that. Although Pavlik's defence is very poor. He has little to no lateral movement. Also ive noted that Pavlik isnt the sharpest knife in the draw. He has no plan B and thats going to be a big problem against an elite fighter. Evidence of this can be seen in the second Taylor fight where when Taylor started to outbox Pavlik, rather than adapt, Pavlik literally just lost rounds - then kept doing the same thing untill Taylor gassed. On the arguement that Pavlik would beat Calzaghe - I really doubt it. Pavlik's style is tailor made for Joe - A come forward fighter with no movement who will stand in front of you without much of a defence. Joe would literally outbox Pavlik all night from the outside much like Taylor did for long periods during the second fight except Joe wouldnt gas out like Taylor did and Joe would also throw more during this time. I also feel if Joe were to get into trouble he could adapt where as im afraid Pavlik cannot - or has not shown in his career than he can at this point. Pavlik vs Winky ? Tbh im not sure. Its hard to tell how much Wright has left . Seeing as we cant judge that from a fight with Hopkins (See Calzaghe vs Hopkins for proof - How can anyone judge a performance level from fighting Hopkins ??!) I feel I need to see him once more before I make an opinion.
You obviously didn't see the bronco McKart fight. Try this. Lean forward, and have an 8 year old slap you on the back of your shoulder, and see if you don't put your hands down to catch yourself. That's exactly what happened in the McKart fight.
There are other fights were he hit the canvas, Zertuche hurt him as well. Pavlik does not have a granite ore near granite chin.
