Pavlik has just signed a new contract with Arum though, you can't say he isn't buying into what Arum is doing. If he wanted a different direction, then the option was clearly open to him. If you're going to use Mogens Palle as a comparison then surely it would be logical to compare Kessler's efforts to extricate himself from that situation and get the fights he wants and Pavlik's apparant satisfaction with his situation.
in defense of pavlik...as far as the money is concerned, he feels anyone else at his status would not even have been asked to take 1 million for a fight...kelly has fought for more than that and now all of a sudden they are offering less..would they offer that to any of the other champs..and if he takes it they will offer it again..just like the mora fight he did not want to fight him because of all the **** fights and he didnt not because of a staff infection,he didnt have a staff infection
if by trying to get him to fight you mean calling him out, then it should also be noted that aa called out odlh as well. also, there is no way that saurland wanted aa to fight pav at 160 while at the same time was in negotiations to have aa fight in this tourney which you know damn well didnt take a week to plan. these negotiations were a long time in the making. and if saurland wanted aa and pav to meet that bad why wasnt pav invited to the tourney?? his resume is just as good as anyone else's fighting in it?? just food for thought, no bad mouthing here and im not saying aa was ducking pav either, im just saying there were more obstacles to the fight than people want to believe
You go to work today and your salary goes from $20 an hour to $5 an hour and you dont voice your opinion? In essence thats exactly what has happened to pavlik. May of 07 he fought Miranda and made-----------1.25 Million September of 07 he fought Taylor and made------1.25 Million February of 08 he fought Taylor again and made---2.5 Million June of 08 he fought Lockett and made-----------2.5 Million October of 08 he fought Hopkins and made--------3 million February of 09 he fought Rubio and made---------1 million His salary was going up and then it dropped off after the loss to hopkins but hes still the MW champ. He hasnt relenquished any belts. He just wants paid like anyone else for his profession. His salary went down on the mandate fight and now they offer him the same salary again. This is all boiling down to Arum and his promoters. They are greedy and not showing respect to pavlik in the numbers and that is why hes voicing his opinion. He sounds frustrated with Arum and I would be too.
If he wins the tournament he'll still only be 31. And if, hypothetically, he wins every fight in the tournament, he'll be 35-0 with credibility and accolades coming out of his ass. I don't think a 31 year old fighter in that position contemplates retirement.
There was a williams fight talk last year but williams didnt agree on the purse. He was scheduled to make 1 mil but didnt want it. Now here we have pavlik complaining about only getting 1 mil and everyone is jumping on him.
Yeah but you cannot discount the Hopkins loss which logically took a lot of the lustre off of Pavlik especially to the casual fan who might tune into HBO. Pavlik needs to gain some momentum to build those offers back up, one way would to get another belt and beat Sturm. Beating up the latin snake and some other unkown lower teir contender aint' gonna help so why not take sturm and the 1 mill? what else is he gonna do to get the money he wants?
How can you compare a $20 salary to one million dollars??? **** the percentage, noone can live on $5 per hour. Pavlik can live very well if he makes one million for each fight for the rest of his career. I hate to bring the bad news, but the world is in the most serious economic crisis since 1929. Making a millions dollars for a fight ain't bad in these times, where a lot of people who used to make $20 an hour are homeless now. Pavlik had a good but not brilliant performance in the rematch against Taylor, predicted to KO Hopkins and got schooled, beat Rubio in a mismatch. A little bit of humility might be in order, his last three fights don't merit some kind of superstart status. He had a great run all the way up to the title and earned his increasing salaries by great performances back then. How about a great performance and then great paydays, instead of being paid as if he is still on top of the world.
Pavlik's salary went down when 17 years older Hopkins took him to school and the unbeaten knockout artist walked away leaving his untouchable image and "0" in the Executioner's hands. Once again: CREDIT for taking on Hopkins, but what a nonsense to say "I ain't gonna trash my career for peanuts" referring to the tournament, but not realizing Hopkins did just that with him. At the moment he doesn't worth $2.5M plus the opponent for HBO, so he should either take on a huge challenge for the money he deserves coming back from the Hopkins loss (which would've been Abraham or maybe now Williams), or keep on fighting these bums or small fighters for a million per fight hoping 4-5 Sergios and people (not the great Youngstown supporters but the general public) jump back on the bandwagon. Seriously, Pavlik needs a Taylor type great win to be in the position to demand $3M, ABC titles mean nothing when it comes to business and popularity. Hopkins took that to school too, now he needs to build himself up again. There's no such thing as a "free loss", especially the type Pavlik suffered. This is professional boxing.
