Pavlik actually is a 'home body' so that choice to not leave the states I don't think is entirely on Arum. If Dirrell doesn't beat Ward, he is out. If he does, I think he wins. I wouldn't count him out of this fight. With Kelly's amateur background, I don't think the question is 'can' he change his style but 'will' he change his style. It is hard to change when things are working. Now with two losses, he simply must reassess.
Pavlik vs the "losers" of the tourney? Your grasp of marketing is nothing short of remarkable for what it isn't. :deal
Pavlik staying at 160 is a good idea if he can still do it. At 168-175 he will have big trouble. A lot of his success comes from his size and strength advantages over his opponents and when he starts moving up that adva ntage starts diminishing. And I have trouble seeing him winning more than a couple of rounds against guys like Ward, Dawson, and Dirrell. Even Bute,Cloud, Kessler, and Froch would probably be favorites over him. Pavlik will struggle over 160. It may sound a bit far-fetched now but I see Pavlik beating up on Chavez as a way of setting the stage for a Pavlik-Pacquaio fight sometime next year if a Mayweather-Pacquaio fight can't be made. Pacquaio-Pavlik would be back in Texas and if there can be some sort of belt(even a minor one) at stake then it can be billed as Pacquio going for a title in 9 divisions, or whatever number it would be. Both guys being with Top Rank and with Arum's love of matching house fighters than I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a Pavlik-Pacquio fight next year.
If he wants to change his style, he needs to change his trainer. Period. Leow can stay on as assistant or whatever to motivate Pavlik, but he really needs someone to teach him lateral movement, at the very least.
I personally don't know what Jack can/can't do as a coach. Have you seen Lyle/Duddy? I've referenced it a couple of times as an example of Jack doing something different because he had a different fighter.
first off u should realy know what your talking about before u shoot the bull..this fight is arums idea and they as someone said thinks pavliks over with and they want their new boy chavez and think he (chavez) will win.. so before u get on everyone and get on kelly know the facts.
To expand on that a little bit, I think the biggest problem with Kelly's career is that he doesn't seem eager to leave his comfort zone- when it comes to his trainer, for example, I think he's loyal to a fault. He's go to reassess everything- style, preparation, you name it- to see if he really wants to make the sacrifices to take another shot at the top. We won't know either way until we see how hungry he is his next fight out.
Why not? Pacquaio may be facing Cotto or Margarito for a 154 pound title in his next fight. Why not move up one more division and face Pavlik? Sure, Pacquaio may be outsized but he's on a totally different level from Pavlik skill wise and Pavlik may already be on the downside of his career. Arum has both fighters and loves to keep his fighters facing each other and the fight would do great business. And if someone would have said a year or two ago that Pavlik would face Chavez Jr you would have laughed it off. Is a Pavlik-Pacquaio fight really that much more of a surprise. What else is Pavlik staying at 160 for? He's been saying for a year or more that he's having trouble making weight and planned on moving up. The big fights are at 168 but he's staying at 160. For what? He already passed on a Martinez rematch and never could make a deal with Williams. Who else is there for Pavlik at 160? I wouldn't put money on a Pavlik-Pacquio fight happening but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see it come off.
