Pavlik is not the brute brawler that I watched bang with Zertuche and Miranda - even though Lockett was right there to be hit, I saw Pavlik's entore skill set really come together, and I'm convinced, now, that he is a special fighter. Here's why: --Focus: With Mayweather's recent retirement, Kelly Pavlik might be the best in the sport at sticking to his game plan, a simple game plan, but nonetheless, he is positivley locked in for every second of every round. This is a truly underrated skill. --Intensity/Stamina: Pavlik has a tremendous punch output and employs a thudding jab that doesn't seem to let up. I don't think anyone on this board has ever seen Kelly Pavlik fatigued - his stamina is probably his best asset. --Distance: In the Lockett fight, I saw Pavlik using his reach to his full advantage. He's become very good at establishing distance, and fighting from a place where number one, his opponent is at the very end of his punch ( which for anoyone sho has trained in boxing, is exactly where you want to be), and number two, he has those extra few inches to see opponent's punches coming. --Defense: I've heard many times on this board and elsewhere, that Pavlik has suspect defense. What I see is a guy who fights tall, ALWAYS keeps his hands up, and has become quite adept at picking off punches. He got hit flush very few times in his second fight with Taylor, and blocked the majority of Lockett's power shots as well. He's not Pernell Whitaker, it's not flashy, it's just a consistent high guard. --Improvement: Pavlik is getting better, not becoming complacent with fame and linear belts and pay-per-views. I saw better defense in this fight, and more combination punching - and most importantly body punching. Pavlik was a headhunter and I think he realized that his best punch in the second Taylor fight was that uppercut to the gut in the 11th round. Opponents concerned about his right will keep a high guard, exposing the body. He'll continue to hone this skill, I'm sure. I'm curious to hear what you all think - I'm not saying that Kelly Pavlik is Marvin Hagler, I'm just impressed with what I see - a simple, but very focused and well prepared gameplan every time out.
With his 'simple' style & gameplan he beats all B-level fighters. I will reserve judgement on anything better than that but fear for him.
Good post & analysis, dude! I've been impressed with him for a LONG time. He's a throwback fighter, someone that comes to fight, to KO his opponent, if he can. Not dance around, or run from punches, like some other so called P4P great who just left the game. Nor is he a cherry picker, like the previously mentioned clown. And I agree that he's still improving, which is a scary thought. Kelly is everything that I look for in a fighter. I've been watching boxing maybe longer than anyone here (no brag, just fact) & I've seen them all. I can remember watching other so-called greats, saying things like "do something already" or "this guy can't even throw a straight right hand" or "this guys a ****in jerk out of the ring", etc. etc. Not with Kelly. He may not be the complete package (yet), and maybe never will be, but the skills & stature that he has been blessed with & the amount of work he's put into the game, plus living a life style conducive to being a Champion, are the things that will allow him to go far in the sport. :good
And the Truth shall set you free! I was telling my wife just last night, that in all the years I've been watching boxing, he's the best thing to ever happen to this boxing fan. And with Adamek on the brink of winning a 2nd World Title in a 2nd wt class, the long wait has been worth the agony.
Spot on with your analysis. His intangibles are his best asset. I hope he can capture the Gatti fans in atlantic city and become a bigger draw. Also I dont think the outside ring demons would affect him like it affected many others who were destined for greatness. He seems very poised, grounded and his team is lined up with family members and people he grew up with . Money. I pray he stay true to his blue collar roots and hopefully, the money wouldnt change him too much cause he would be getting alot of it with performances like the display he put on this past saturday
While I was watching the fight with Lockett, there were numerous times when Lockett ducked Kelly's jab but missed the opportunity to counter a wide open Pavlik. I'd like to see Pavlik vs a good counterpuncher who has good movement- I think Kelly would struggle. He's good and improving, but his impressive wins have come against styles that he should win against every time.
JT was not a B-level fighter. Any fighter that decisions BHOP twice and draws Winky Wright is NOT a B-level fighter...:deal
I am really beginning to like pavlik! I was a pessimist at the start but after watching his fights, yep I can agree he is a class fighter.
Last Sept. = $1.25 mil Last Feb. = Not sure...maybe $1.5 mil Last week = $2.5 Next fight in Sept. or Oct. = ??? If its Calazghe, got to be close to $5 mil, I would say. Affliction Clothing endorsement = $100,000/yr for 3 years. So far, he seems like the same old Kelly Pavlik who fought his way up the rankings. I pray too that he never changes. Welcome to the new face of American boxing!:!:
Good thread, well analylized, its nice to hear someone breaking down Pavlik for the sake of it and not just for the sake of stating he is the remedy to Joe Calzaghe. I also agree with a lot of what you said especially about Focus, he does stick to his ****.....good post player.
PAVLIK is good no doubt... but against a adapable and intelligent fighter like Joe, Hopkins etc etc if you take away the target for pavlik to hit he does not have a all round game to adapt to another style. If joe calzaghe did fight him i think pavlik will lose simply because he has never faught a fighter at the same level and the ring smarts/style/adaptibility of calzaghe. Its not saying he is a bad fighter its just he doesn't have the all round game to beat someone like calzaghe, as he will use his movement to confuse and keep him at a angle so he can't throw those straight right hands. what be intresting is if pavlik fights the same way against joe (if they fight) as we know joe can adapt to anything the opponent can bring on fight night.
I think the less-experianced boxing fans would look at his fight with Lockett and come to the conclusion that The Ghost is spectacular. The smarter ones will acknowledge that Lockett was a stationary target, not throwing anything back, so there isn't really any improvement to speak of. Kelly Pavlik doesn't have enough variety in his work to outbox someone like Joe Calzaghe, and he won't hit Joe often enough to stop him either. Kelly Pavlik is a great fighter and a credit to the sport, but he shouldn't take a fight with Joe. He can't stop him.
IMO, I was wondering if some of the bull spits (very few it was) with Lockett had to do with just how short Locks was and on top of it how short he was fighting. **I hadn't watched the replay until yesterday, and it really caught my attention what a **** Max K. was in the post fight, esp. to Gary Lockett. With Lockett still there, he kept saying **** about the "Gary Locketts of the World" and **** like that.
