I'm a big fan of Pavlik but I revisited the countdown to Taylor Pavlik 1 (I prefer the 1 half hour countdowns over the 24 7 stuff) They focused on ow Taylor was so popular and had so much hope and after a few years on top he lost all his popularity.

1 They have failed to get German belt holder to unify "not necessarily their fault but they didnt"

2 Targeting 154 fighters Taylor Ouma and Spinks and a moving up Wright
Pavlik vs Martinez and targeting Williams

3 Struggle to fulfill expectations and saw their reputation in the sport reduced.

Not saying Pavlik will lose or anything but I find it odd how after similar amounts of time on top both have done about the same and are about the same level of popularity at this point in their reigns.

Yep, Pavlik has been somewhat of a disappointment.

This is true to a point. But Taylor fought the very best fighters in and around his weight. Spinks was a belt holder at 154 at least. Pavlik has been fighting bums from 154.

I think that everyone outside of the State of Ohio has grown tried of watching Pavlik fight 154 fighter.

I do agree Taylor's resume is better but their standing is about the same. And even Ohio is skeptical his fight there drew a small audience

Kelly has fought 3 legit MW's already regardless of what some dim wits claim. Two were 'official' mandatories. One was a fight by Dec. 31 or be stripped, we don't care if you do have a documented medical problem with the hand. Paul Williams is ranked #2 by The Ring at MW and Sergio Martinez just gave him ALL he could handle. Look at the Pavlik is Champ poll. Martinez is edging Kelly out. Chill. You confuse the people on these boards as 'real boxing fans'. There is no evidence to support that many of them are.

With Taylor no one really cared to see him vs Sturm. I still think todays shitty verison of Taylor beats the bets verison of Sturm.

And really neither guy had any fighters in the division worth talking about(except Abraham) and Winky vs Taylor was the best fight to be made at the time and was a HUGE fight. And Winky was a Middleweight he's a big boy. And like Winky, Williams his making is mark in Middleweight and it is the best fight to be made in the division.

And you can compare Spinks to Martinez but I dont fault either man for fighting them. Spinks was the IBF champ at 154 and just beat Karmizan who was thought to be the best in the division.

Strum wanted no part of Taylor(or anyone good for that matter). Abraham wanted Pavlik.

Please name the 154 pound fighters he has fought. I must have missed that. If Taylor is allowed to fight Spinks then isn't Martinez comparable?

I agree with these statements my thread is about popularity Taylor made good fights but got no credit. Kelly continues to lose his popularity.

I'd say their popularity at this point in reigns is similar

Arum said it well when he said fight fans are fickle. Easy to get, lose and get again. I wouldn't worry too much at this point. The hand issue is what it was.

A decisive win would be a huge boost

Taylor was reviving his reign by fighting Pavlik and lost

Pavlik is fightin Martinez to revive his reign and the first guy with a legit chance to win.

Same kind of scenario. A big win would bounce him back.

Seeing Martinez gas vs Williams and seeing how Pavlik is a pressure fighter wit ha high volume and a good chin I think he wins down the stretch

I see the simlilarities. However, Martinez is the first guy who came up from 154 to fight KP.

Espino hadn't fought at 154 since 2001, and hadn't lost a fight in over 6 years.

Rubio had nine consecutive wins at 160.

Even Gary "I'll Take A Knee Please" Lockett had 14 straight wins at 160 or higher.

As far as regaining popularity, I think KP's chances are much better than Jermain's were. Kelly does not have a monster coming after him. Taylor had two, three if you rate Abraham.

And Martinez is not as much a threat to Kelly as Kelly was to Jermain

Pavlik's reign hasn't lived up to expectations, but he's doing the best he can considering the circumstances. You can't fault him that. I'm really excited for Saturday's fight, I think Pavlik wears Martinez down and keeps him at the end of his jab ("double jab!") before following through with big right hands.

Pavlik late TKO or comfortable UD.

The better Pavlik looks here, the better Long Tall Paul is gonna look when he whips him. :good

I think Pavlik beats Williams easier than he does Martinez.

You were doing so well until that last sentence. Pdub is a MUCH easier fight for Kelly style wise. :deal
