Pavlik V Calzaghe... the more I think about it the more I believe that this fight should happen...

Joe for whatever reasons/excuses never faced a prime RJJ.

Joe for whatever reasons/excuses never faced a prime B Hopkins.

Joe for whatever reasons/excuses never faced a prime Toney.

Joe for whatever reasons/excuses never even faced the likes of a prime...Johnson....Tarver...etc

"Calzaghe ducked me as WBO super middleweight champion.
    Glen Johnson. ("The Gentleman")

Now for the first time it is blatantly obvious he can face a prime opponent, if he so wishes, who is a top ten p4p guy. Currently number 7 in the world p4p rankings with ring magazine. There is little excuse not to.

Joe who is an elite fighter has never faced a prime p4p top ten opponent in 15+ years, now is his chance. Pavlik clearly wants the fight.
“Frank Warren wants to do it,” Arum said. “He has to talk to Calzaghe. Kelly wants to fight Calzaghe.”
    Bob Arum

Personally I think Calzaghe will win the fight, and I wasn't overly keen on the idea of it being made to begin with; but the more I think about it the more I believe that Calzaghe should really be making this fight happen!

Also, I don't understand the sudden change of heart. The idea of fighting Pavlik is something Joe has been talking about for a long while, now he appears to have dropped it like a stone. Why?

Surely an elite boxer should fight at least one prime p4p top ten guy in 15 years (Joe has never faced even one, now's his chance, it's there for the taking).

Surely it makes a mockery of boxing if he doesn't take the fight and chooses an easier option? Or am I being too harsh?

My point is not about who he would or wouldn't have beat, but the fact that in 15 years he has never faced a prime top ten p4p guy. Now is his chance.

Or perhaps Pavlik should focus on becoming undisputedly the best guy in his own division.

he wasnt in the same weight class as toney or bhop wen they were in the top 10,i think frank warren needs to cop a fair amount of blame over calzaghe's resume.

Ive read countless posts saying Hopkins, RJJ etc were never available to joe....he never got the chance.

Now he does have that chance to fight a prime top ten p4p guy.

Well Kessler was in his prime and in my book p4p top-15, and Hopkins, while far from his prime was still seen as one of the p4p best.
Now, i'm no big fan of Calzaghe, but if i was i think i'd have a few pretty good arguments to set against yours right there.

I think if Calzaghe stays in the game for another year or two ... despite losing to Roy Jones ... a fight between he and Pavlik would be huge and the more the US sees Calzaghe the more they're going to like his personality.

    He's humble but he's confident ... and he doesn't talk trash ...

The same goes for Pavlik ...

If they hooked up in the next year despite whatever goes on in their careers ... they can produce some good numbers PPV wise ... atleast 500k ... two white guys who aren't cocky ... who just want to fight and put on a show are going to bring in alot of casual fans.

Neither were prime p4p top ten; so point counters my arguement.

No body could argue that 43yr old Hopkins was at his best(in his prime). Kessler wasn't in the top ten p4p rankings; thats the end of that one. Kesslers a good win for Joe though...

Pavlik may well turn out to be something special, it's a missed oportunity for Joe.

Whether Hopkin's was past his prime is irrelevant. He was in the top 5 P4P (higher than Pavlik is now) and fights 2 divisions up from Pavlik.

hopkins and jones wanted no part in calzaghe before. pavlik should think about abraham before he talks about calzaghe. calzaghe is settling the score with the very men that ducked him in his prime. anyway as soon as pavlik does move up and gets schooled by kessler you will see just how much hype pavlik is. i'd personaly rather see winky fight calzaghe as his style will unsettle calzaghe. if they do fight, calzaghe by TKO rd 7.

Pavlik needs to clean up his own division before challenging Calzaghe. Let Joe earn his $$$'s fighting Jones whilst Pavlik fights Abraham then if Joe beats Jones then let him fight the winner of Pav/Abraham.

I do hope Joe fights Pavlik or Abraham though. These two are young and in their primes (or possibly they havn't reached their prime yet but atleast they are not past their primes like Jones and Hopkins). I love Joe and wouldn't begrudge him wanting to take the money and retire after Jones, and i do think he would beat Pavlik and Abraham but there will always be that nagging thought in the future years when reminiscing about Calzaghes career that he didn't fight the winner of Pav/Abraham

I disagree, I think beating a prime top ten guy (who may well do things in the future), would add a lot to Joes legacy.

Hopkins being 43 years old does matter about the quality of the win; of cause it does. The win over Hopkins is nowhere near what it would have been worth years ago. I hope so anyway...

I just think it would be telling if Joe faced a top ten guy in his prime, just once in 15+ yrs.

Everyone needs to get over the hypothetical Calzaghe vs. Pavlik fight. It will never happen thanks to RJJ being available. Calzaghe will stick to his word and retire after RJJ. I wanted to see this fight happen in the worst way, but it will not. Calzaghe's career has been very carefully planned from day 1. He will not take a big risk in Pavlik when he has a past it RJJ whom he can make plenty of money fighting. Pavlik vs. Abraham and Pavlik vs. Kessler are the 2 fights I want to see next for Pavlik's career. Calzaghe is done after the fight with RJJ. Forget about him.
