Skimmed through the thread. Calzaghe will fight RJJ and looks like Pavlik v Mayorga or a mando against Rubio. I hope they don't put Mayorga in with him. He will get his head knocked off.
In many ways, it would make much more sense from a promoting point of view for Calzaghe to fight Jones first. Pavlik has a mandatory in Rubio that needs to be taken care of, which he will. It'll make for a super fight in early 09. I agree with you, Jet, Mayorga would get blasted by Pavlik. It would be a real beat down because he's got such a sturdy chin.
**** i love Mayorga but he will get seriously smashed in this fight. If Pavlik goes hard at him it wont last 3 rds
Here's an article by William Dettloff that sums up what I'm saying, in a much more articulate fashion CALZAGHE-PAVLIK: TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING By William Dettloff Almost immediately following Kelly Pavliks easy win over one of the Little Rascals Saturday nightI forget which onerumors and dates started flying around about a fight against Joe Calzaghe, possibly in October. Youll recall that Calzaghes team has been negotiating a fight with Roy Jones since Calzaghes win over Bernard Hopkins in April. Jones, apparently even this older, wiser, more accommodating (see: desperate) version, is notoriously difficult when it comes to these matters, so its no great surprise that things havent progressed. Now it looks as though Pavlik, who has yet to establish his bona fides as difficult, may bump Jones from the picture. Many of you see this as a good thing. I do not. Calzaghe-Pavlik can be a big fight, or it can be a very big fight. Which one it turns out to be depends largely on when it happens. Ill concede that Calzaghe-Pavlik is more interesting than is Calzaghe-Jones, primarily because of Jones faded stature, which looks even grayer next to Pavliks striking (if balding) youth. But this one can simmer a little while. Theres no good reason not to do, say, Pavlik-Arthur Abraham and Calzaghe-Jones firsttwo very interesting fightsand then make Calzaghe-Pavlik next. Hell, put them on the same show if you want. Were not losing anything that way. If anything, we gaintwo big, interesting fights followed by one very big, interesting one. I realize Calzaghes age is a consideration here, and there have been so many big fights in the last year that weve gotten used to moving fast. Normally Im all for that. Not this time. This one can and should cook for a little while.
You've got to laugh at the general forum. Over the last week or so, I've read the following... *It's taken Pavlik one year to do what it took Calzaghe 11 to do, and thats beat 3 top fighters. *Zuniga is comparable to the best guys that Calzaghe has on his resume. Zuniga FFS! It's no use explaining styles or anything to them either, because as far as they're concerned, Pavlik's a monster of a puncher with a big workrate, which makes him unstoppable. USA!!
Zuniga is a solid opponent & borderline top 10, definitely top 15 at Super Middleweight. Tho i wont go as far as some guys on the general forum.:yep
Let's face it, the US' grip on boxing is fading dramatically in comparison to the past and they'll be jumping on anything with a few decent performances. Arum thinks Pavlik would beat Hagler FFS!
I see that Kessler has called out Pavlik, should he get past the challenge of Sartison. This is translated, but you get the jist: http://translate.google.com/transla...m=1&ct=result&prev=/search?q=team+palle&hl=en Either way, throwing in Abraham and Miranda, there's some great fights to be made.
