It was close. I, too, was at the MGM. Taylor fought well. Sometimes he turned on the speed and when he did he totally dominated. It wasn't often enough, but he sure looked like a pro out there when he did. I was most impressed with him. Being from Cleveland, though, I wanted Kelly to knock his ass out again. At the very least you know that Taylor is capable of some really great boxing. Unfortunately he, like a lot of other younger guys, spends too much time taking it easy.
I think 115-113 Pavlik is what I had. It was extremely close and Taylor did a lot of the flashier more eye catching work. I think Pavlik basically stole it in the last 2 rounds, his stamina won the fight. If Taylor fought like this I think Froch is in trouble. I wasn't impressed with him against Lacy, but I think he didn't feel threatened enough to produce a 100% performance.
Good post there....:yep I remember ONE guy I think was actually picking Pavlik to win on points, all others supporting Pavlik, had picked Pav to win by KO and likely earlier than last time. Like Boo said earlier, the most impressive improvements from thier first fight seemed to belong to Taylor, as he made the adjustments needed to keep from being slumped in the corner like the first fight. First time I saw it, was on a shitty stream (with Chinese commentation) and I have to say, I wasn't real sure. 114-114 seemed about right, but getting to see it a few hours later from the broadcast footage, it looked a good bit more like Pav squeeked it out by taking the last 2 rounds. I'm a fan of Taylor too, so as much as I don't like to say it, I had warmed myself to the idea that if it was close, Taylor would get the Dec.. I mean esp. after seeing the scorecards they had from the first fight, where they had Pav WAY behind at the time of the stoppage, I kind of assumed if Pav didn't KO him, it was going to Taylor if close. BUT....low and behold, they got it right.
Well Pavlik was getting robbed on the cards in the first fight. Pavlik, Taylor, Loew and Steward all thought Kelly was ahead at the time of the stoppage.
I had it for Pavlik, and JT did not do enough damage to win it. He had his moments, shown flashes of brilliance, but overall, he was not consistent, and seems lacking that fire and confidence to really convince the judges he was there to win the fight, and not just to survive. If it was his best, which IMO it was, then I can say Pavlik has his numbers. A TKO and a clear UD loss. No wonder there was no clamor for a third fight. JT and team knows it as much as those who have seen it.
Why would there be clamor for a third fight at this point, after Taylor lost the first two? Both sides have mentioned the probability of a future meeting at 168, but that will only come if it's a relevant fight for the division at that time. Taylor has even mentioned Pavlik's name recently as a possible opponent.
Hey Pipe, I think I've told you this before, but my sister and brother-inlaw are also huge KP fans. We watched the PPV together, and when Kelly caught Jermain with that body shot in the 11th, I let out an involuntary OH NO! My sister let out an OH ****. That's how much Taylor won us over. My brother-inlaw and I both scored it 116-112, but like the judges, there was little agreement about who won which rounds. I've never understood people who critisize Kelly's performance that night. He now holds a clear decision over a guy who holds two decisions over BHop. How the **** do you critisize that? Here's a side-bar: Half way through the first fight a non-fan stopped by my sisters house. He watched a couple rounds and said: "Damn, that skinny white guy can really fight:yep
I had it 115-113 for Pavlik but I was surprised that at least one of the judges didn't give Taylor more rounds and make it a SD. At risk of sounding like an HBO commentator though, Pavlik did land far more punches, almost twice as many i think, so maybe the Judge who scored it 117-111 did see something I missed at the time.
The point there is, Pavlik won the 2nd fight convincingly, and hence, a third fight was not needed. The thread was about the closeness of the rematch. I had it for Pavlik, and I believe JT, even at his best, would have a very difficult time to beat him. I do not know that Taylor is still interested for a 3rd fight, but what I know is it won't be different from what we have see in their two previous fights: another loss for him.
