I don't recall Mayorga ever being hurt by Vargas. I don't think Pavlik would easily ko Mayorga as people think. He would likely go out after a being worn by many shots like against Tito. I think De La Hoya had him out fast was because he first dropped him early with a punch (left hook) that Mayorga never saw coming and De La Hoya's speed certainly bothered him. Pavlik doesn't have the speed to do the same thing IMO. THis would play out like the Pavlik vs Zertuche fight. Zertuche came in to fight and gave it his all, but he was much too small to deal with Pavlik; eventually the punishment took its toll.

Mayorga said, in the post fight interview, that he wanted to go back down in weight because, and I'm quoting him "this gentleman hit way too hard".

I agree with you that he didn't seem hurt by Vargas' punches, I'm just quoting what he said.

Although Mayorga showed greater patience and a skill set he hasn’t previously exhibited in his fight with Vargas he was still fighting way above his natural weight and against a very depleted fighter. But his win will mean that not only will his career go on but King will rely on him to once again turn into his alter ego, that of the raving mad man, when he finds an opponent that will intrigue the public. It will, however, have to be at either welterweight or junior middleweight. Mayorga himself intimated that not only was 166 pounds, the catch weight for the Vargas fight, way too much for him but that Vargas hit much harder than he’d like to experience again.

“The weight was too much,” he said at the post fight press conference. “This gentleman hits way too hard.” It was a bit odd to hear Mayorga refer to Vargas as a “gentleman” considering all the names he called him leading up to the opening bell but it was nothing compared to when he walked across the dais and kissed Fernando on the cheek. But then this is the same guy who begged Oscar De La Hoya’s forgiveness and to get him some more money after having a dispute with Don King over his contract for his bout with the “Golden Boy”. De La Hoya was taken aback considering that Mayorga had the temerity to disrespect his wife as he would to Vargas’s, but again that’s all part of the Mayorga shtick.

Pavlik deserves an easy shot, Kind of how everybody does. This is just to make him look very good and get some exposure. Mayorga is a character so he brings some interest. But he is going to get hurt bad.

These days, Mayorga is nothing more than a punching bag for the elites.

If this fight happens will Pavlik receive the same negative critique as Jermaine Taylor did for fighting a Jr Middleweight? We'll see.

I never doubted what you said, but intended it as it being strange that he would have made that statement, considering that he didn't seem hurt throughout the bout. Interesting he said that though.

of course, he's a name guy who's basically a punching bag with an exaggerated reputation for toughness.

I don't think Mayorga would last 3 rounds with Pavlik.
Pavlik is letting himself down really, first of all Lockett is a gimme and now talk of Mayorga!!! That is assuming that the Mayorga bout is not just someones fantasy?!?! Heaven forbid!!!!!

Hopefully this fight does not get made, there are more deserving challengers than Mayorga. If this is true, what weight would the fight be at?

Lockett is a mandatory and Mayorga is someone's wet dream based on what they WANT to read into an article. Read the article.
