Published: Sun, January 17, 2010 @ 12:10 a.m. Sergio Martinez is the front-runner to fight for Pavliks title. By JOE SCALZO Vindicator sports staff YOUNGSTOWN With Paul Williams pricing himself out of a possible middleweight title fight with Kelly Pavlik, the door has been opened for Sergio Martinez. But its not yet an open-and-shut deal. Martinez, who lost a majority decision to Williams last month, is the front-runner out of four finalists to meet Pavlik in a possible April or May bout on HBO. Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, president Todd duBoef and Pavliks co-manager Cameron Dunkin will meet with HBO officials next week in New York to discuss Pavliks future. Possible opponents include Martinez, Anthony Mundine, WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm and a fourth possibility that Top Rank is keeping under wraps for now, Dunkin said. Williams, who was scheduled to fight Pavlik on Dec. 5, does not appear to be among the finalists. After agreeing to fight Pavlik for $1.2 million in December, he now wants to split the proceeds 50-50. Pavliks handlers have refused. Thats not happening, Dunkin said. Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KOs) served as an injury replacement for Pavlik when he had to cancel his Dec. 5 bout with Williams due to a left hand injury. The bout became a Fight of the Year candidate with some observers (including Pavliks camp) believing Martinez did enough to win. Pavliks preference is to fight Williams, but the 50-50 demand and the bad blood between the two camps makes the fight unlikely for now. After dropping the puck for the ceremonial faceoff before Saturdays Phantoms game at the Covelli Centre, Pavlik dropped the name of the possible fourth contender. And were looking at a fight over in England against a guy by the name of [Brian] Rose, Pavlik said. Rose is a light middleweight who is 14-0-1. Right now, everything is up in the air and were hoping to find out within a week, said Pavlik. The quicker the better. The faster we find out the better so we can start preparing for the fight, take care of training, get some sparring partners in. Pavlik said the ideal fight date would be late March or early April. At the latest, the end of April but I dont want to go any longer than that. Pavlik said hes willing to fight Williams, but doesnt think its likely. Were hoping, said Pavlik of a Williams bout, but for some reason he doesnt want to take the fight. Were trying everything. He outpriced himself again for this fight so ... if by some chance we can come to an agreement, Id like to fight with him. Right now, for me, Sergio Martinez is a better fight. In the last fight, I thought Martinez beat Paul Williams. Arum believed he had a deal in place with Williams adviser, Al Haymon, on several occasions in the summer of 2008. The deal broke down when Haymon kept increasing his demands (from $750,000 with perks to $1.5 million), prompting Top Rank to arrange a Pavlik-Bernard Hopkins fight instead, Dunkin said. Pavlik (36-1, 32 KOs) lost that fight by unanimous decision, although he retained the titles since the bout was held at 170 pounds. Then, last fall, Pavlik twice postponed a Williams bout (first in October, then in December) due to the hand injury, prompting the Williams camp to accuse Pavlik of exaggerating his injury because he was scared to fight Williams. Pavliks camp, in turn, accused Williams of only arranging the fight because he knew Pavlik was banged up. They never wanted to fight Kelly, Dunkin said. I think the kid [Williams] does. I think his trainer does. But I dont think [Al] Haymon and [promoter Dan] Goossen does. After Pavlik knocked out Miguel Espino on Dec. 15 to defend his title, Arum approached Williams handlers with the same offer they made last fall, with Williams getting $1.2 million. Williams camp came back with the 50-50 demand. Until they change that, itll never happen, said Dunkin. One Web site reported Pavliks camp has agreed to a deal with Martinez, but those reports are premature, according to Dunkin, Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels and Pavliks trainer, Jack Loew. It looks like theyre pushing the Martinez fight, Loew said. The 34-year-old Martinez, who hails from Argentina and now lives in Spain, suffered his only other loss to Antonio Margarito in February of 2000. Hes known as a speedy left-hander with decent power and good boxing skill. Williams (38-1, 27 KOs), who lives in Augusta, Ga., is more of a slugger than Martinez, although he also has good boxing ability. This content is protected
You think using "avlik" in the title will keep the haters out? So, is Rose the London fight that Arum mentioned? I'd like to see Kelly expand his horizons some, but I a little known LMW? If the Dubia offer included Sturm I'd much prefer that match up.
wtf would he come all the way over to the UK to fight a no one. Wise up pavlik. Take a winner takes 55% fight with williams or just accept 50-50 and stop being a gimp
If he goes to London that means someone is putting up big money for him to go. No other reason. Williams is in no position to dictate terms to the lineal champ.
That's funny... could not find a way to edit Title... Anyhow, Pavlik, Rose, England, What the heck is going on!!
Theres not much to hate about KP. I just didnt like how he wouldnt give Bhop his props after the loss. Still an exciting fighter. I think that its time for a new trainer though. :rasta
It is not possible for Pavlik to agree to a 50-50 purse split with Williams. Goosen demanded a 50-50 co-promotion. The demand for a 50-50 co-promotion takes the negotiating completely out of the hands of the fighters, and puts it completely in the hands of the promoters. Arum told Goosen "no way" when he ask for the same deal 6 months ago. Nothing has happened to change Arum's mind, so why would Goosen ask for something he knows full well Arum will never give him? Think about it!
Brian Rose? Are they ****ing serious? Typical Pavlik. How can he say Williams doesn't want the fight when the 50/50 is there on the table?
What exactly is the difference? They are asking for 50/50, it's that simple. Given Williams has beaten Verno Philips, Winky Wright and Sergio Martinez in the time that Pavlik has moved back to 160 and defended his belt against two C level guys, I'd say he's more than entitled to it.
When a challenger demands that the linear, unified, world champion give him a 50-50 co-promotion, that is not an offer. That is called ducking. That is not PW's fault, but people need to face the fact that on the night of December 5th, 2009 Dan Goosen took Paul Williams into protective custody.
HOW THE F*CK DOES A GUY WHO IS RANKED THE 147 MW GET A SHOT AT KELLY PAVLIK, ARE YOU GUYS KIDDING ME OR ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!! A GUY LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT EVEN BE MENTIONED WITH PAVLIK!!!:--( TEAM PAVLIK SUCKS!!! I"M GLAD I JUMP OF THE PAVLIK TRAIN EARLY!!!
And when that champion offers the guy a pathetic low-ball offer like $1.2 million when that challenger is a top P4P fighter who's been fighting & beating the guy's Pavlik should of been fighting, then that's called ducking.
See post above. Williams is being offered a career high payday and a cut well above the typical 'challenger's' cut. If he wants the belts and lineal title, let him take the offer. He has nothing to offer Pavlik except people will wake up to the fact Pdub is a true WW after all and Kelly will just reap the hate once more.
Who cares about it being a career high pay-day? It doesn't matter that it's bigger than his other pay-days, it's still not big enough compared to what he deserves. And that's more than your 'typical' challenger's cut because he's not your typical challenger. He's a top 7/8 P4P talent, who seems to be Pavlik's dirty work for him in ridding the scene of the likes of Winky & Martinez as of now.
