Am I alone in finding this potential fight as a letdown? We don't need to get flashbacks to "Cotto vs Gomez".

I realize that Lorenzo and Abraham are booked for their next two fights. ( Assuming they win the first or in Abraham's case keeps his jaw intact, and if they don't then they won't be facing Pavlik anyway ) But I'm still hoping that a Calzaghe fight can be made or Winky Wright decides that making a reasonable offer beats retirement.

Unfortunately, this is the route Pavlik must take in order to unify the middleweight belts. He has to fight his mandatories, and unfortunately, 160 lbs doen't have real big names. At least Lockett and Rubio are bangers, which brings out the best in Pavlik and will make for some exciting middleweight fights, until Pavlik KO's them. Hopefully Kelly can squeeze in a big name fighter, ie....Calzaghe.

I just don't like the way they decide mandatories and rankings in general. For example the WBC recently moved Lockett to #15 ONLY because everyone wanted that title to be on the line along with the WBO title. And look at Lorenzo for Christ's sake! He has yet to fight a top 100 fighter, and his last 6 opponents had a total of 55 losses! All the sanctioning bodies should have a hard and fast rule that says the only way to move up is by beating a guy with a higher ranking. There should also be a rule that if you're in the top 10, you have to beat a top 10 fighter every six months or lose your spot.

Yes its dumb, but Pavlik deserves a few easier fights after MIranda and Taylor twice. Two more brutal KO's and he will become even more popular and then after that I can see him fighting the good names, AA, JC, Kessler, Andrande

Rubio is ranked and therefore I think can be a mandatory defense, but he's by no means last I checked the #1 Contender like Lockett and Lorenzo are. Pavlik could easily make a mandatory defense by fighting Winky or Sturm.

Well the first rule sounds good. ( The exception being of course when a fighter retires and leaves a weight class moving everyone up )

But the second rule is probably unworkable. Raise the length of time to a year and make it so you have to fight ( not win. Taylor hasn't won a fight since May of last year, but I'd hardly consider kicking him out of the top 10 if he had chosen to remain at 160 ) with 5 spots of his ranking. So the #1 Contender has to fight someone from thr #2 through #6 slot. etc.

There are many problems with a Winky fight. Pavlik said "I'd love to smack Winky around." He's the only fighter I've ever seen Kelly talk smack about. Arum has a serious resentment against winky. This stuff stems from the fact that Team Pavlik called winky out numerous times when Pavlik was on the way up, but winky just shined 'em on. After pavlik beat JT, Winky basically demanded a fight and claimed Pavlik was ducking him. Kelly wants the fight. Arum can't get past his ego. Plus it's probably not a fight that would do big PPV numbers, but big numbers would be needed to pay eveybody.

It's at at least a big step up in money numbers from a Rubio fight. At some point (soon) Winky needs to accept that he's just not as marketable as he used to be and take a fight for lesser money or retire.

Well Pavlik still a kid 25 so he is still learning some fighter at this age are still prospects so so fights like this is good for him, for learning experiense and some money. If he was 30 or more they we are talking about a waste of time.

I have no problem with Pavlik fighting Lockett and Rubio. True neither are elite, but both are decent and seasoned veterans, and in Rubio's case, a solid puncher who could hurt Pavlik. I like that Kelly's staying active and fighting on regular basis, that was Taylor's biggest mistake only fighting twice a year and against awkward fighters. After Rubio in Sept. I could see Kelly fighting again in December against Sturm or Duddy. HBO doesn't want to pay for a Abraham-Pavlik fight til '09.

Also, let's see if Rubio gets past Lopez. David's a rangy knock-out puncher himself and has starched some decent opposition.

Pavlik is being match well. Lockett, Rubio and Duddy styles will mash well with Pavlik and produce very exciting battles which lead to a super fight with Abraham. by the middle of 2009 Pavlik will known as the most exciting fighter in boxing.:good
I can see why Arum does not want Pavlik to fight Winky because a Pavlik vs Winky fight just not going to produce the kind of fire works that will make Pavlik a superstar it would be a points win for Pavlik in a interesting but not dynamic bout:deal
