Roy would have a better chance than some people are giving him. Guys remember that against Pavlik, he would have the much faster hands, and Pavlik has never faced someone who can put combinations like Roy can; even a Jones past his prime. I think Pavlik is durable though to handle the less threating combination Roy has to offer. Biggest issue with Roy physically is his legs. I just watched the Prince Badi Ajamu vs Jones fight. If Jones looks & fights like he did in the first couple of round in that fight, he doesn't stand a chance. After watching that fight again, and watching when he fought Tito (which he did much better in), I realize Jones still has some left in the tank, though he seems to be wrecked mentally from those ko's. In the beginning and some through the Badi Ajamu fight, Jones' face expressions and reaction to punches thrown were not good. He had this flinch thing going on his face that looked like he was really scared of getting hit. But when he wanted to pour on to Ajamu, he seemed to do it with ease. Im really wondering what the heck was the difference in the Tito fight and Ajamu fight, besides the weight difference. He looked straight way old in the Ajamu fight and out of shape physically (soft in the legs and back & arms).
Most world rated fighters would beat Jones now imo. Pavlik would definately knock him out. Prime though, RJJ would bash him to bits.
Prime Roy would make Pavlik look like an amateur. He'd never hit Roy and Roy would finish what Taylor couldn't in the first fight. It would end early. Now though, Pavlik's workrate would just grind Roy down. He may catch Pavlik with a good shot or two and even drop him, but by round 10 it would be Pavlik by brutal KO. Don't forget, most of Roy's defense these days is laying against the ropes. Pavlik would split those gloves and catch him with a straight right, and then, see ya. Still, it sounds like a really entertaining fight.
The main thing from this thread, is Prime RJJ would whopp Pavlik's ass Current RJJ would: perhaps stand a chance if he's in the right frame of mind If he's too big headed (which is likely), then he'l get KO'd. Not something i like to say either, being a big RJJ fan
I think Jones could beat him. Pavlik does best against guys who stand in front of him. He's a solid fighter, but he's kinda like a straight-forward freight train -- just get out of the way. A good mover, counter-puncher like Jones could beat him, me thinks. But maybe jones is too far past it at this point.
How do you figure that? Roy has been fighting at 175lbs and got knocked out by natural 175lbers! Pavlik is fighting at 160lbs.. I think it would be alot better matchup then people are saying even if Roy is washed up.
