Does anyone know where there is video available of this fight? Seems like it was a great scrap- Pavlik knocked down in round one, ultimately stops Zuniga at the end of the 10th round. Not sure if it was even televised though. With Pavlik's rise, Zuniga is looking pretty legit himself. His only other loss is a questionable decision in Puerto Rico (against Daniel Santos, a Puerto Rican fighter), and he knocked out that undefeated Russian on Shobox. Anyway, both these guys are all action and I would love to see this old fight if available
I agree 1000%. I've never seen this fight & would really like to. Anyone got a link??? :huh BTW, welcome newbie, what took ya so long? ;-)
I remember watching the fight on some Spanish channel, I think Telefutra. It was an excellent fight. Pavlik was down in round 1, but it was an off balance knockdown. Pavlik was hitting Zuniga with tremendous shots, he just wouldn't go down. His corner finally had enough, calling it quits after the 9th round.
I saw the same telecast. I thought the knockdown was just a slight bit more than an off balance knockdown. The McKart knockdown was an off balance knockdown where the punch hit Pavlik lightly on the shoulder. The Zuniga punch was a pretty solid left hook. Pavlik wasn't hurt, but it was legitimate.
Great post! I've been looking everywhere for this fight as well, and can't seem to find it anywhere. It was televised on Telefutura, but I don't get that channel. Kelly has said a number of times this was his toughest fight - at least before the Taylor fight. You're right, Zuniga proved his meddle in a big way against Oganov, and lasted longer with Pavlik than anyone else.
Pavlik was caught solid and put down. He talks a lot about how tough and a solid puncher Zuniga is for a "little" guy. The fight was on Telefutra. I don't know but they may be something on youtube.
hmm, given that its not on youtube or boxingwholesale.com's Pavlik fight collection, doesnt seem too readily available. alas. youtube does have Pavlik's very first fight (two weeks after his high school graduation), which is kind of interesting (if uneventful). surprising that it was on ESPN- i guess Pavlik had a better amatuer pedigree than I realized. great board by the way- i am indeed a "newbie" but a diehard boxing fan (and aspiring boxer...we'll see how that goes)
thanks- i can't send a PM back until i have fifty post though (apparently). i have a fast connection speed
having seen this fight, its pretty clear that Pavlik is VERY vulnerable to big left hooks (which makes sense, given that his extended straight right leaves him vulnerable). maybe de la hoya could redeem his reputation against him! (haha, not gonna happen i realize)
more thoughts: first of all, this was a GREAT FIGHT (and, sorry, i dont have it to give away to people...) I think Zuniga displayed the most likely way to beat Pavlik- stay on the inside as much as possible, lean in, and bomb away. awkward, but much like Iran Barkley beat Hearns in their second fight. second, this ended more on account of an out-of-control cut (from a head butt i believe) than Zuniga being beat into submission. he was losing, but definitely still fighting strong. the weirdest thing, by far, was the fact that Pavlik doesnt seem to cut whatsoever. at one point, his body was covered in blood like he was a butcher, but all from Zuniga. his face looked like he just came from a salon or something. given the action in the fight and punches he took, it would probably have seemed like Zuniga was winning if Pavlik's face was cut and his wasnt. interesting does anyone know more about Zuniga or who he intends to fight next? im a big fan now....
