Man, I about dropped dead this morning when I started to read this crap. But then, all turned good. I had a hearty laugh over it. He's turning out to be a real comedian. This content is protected Pavlik to retire? By Antonio Castro / Photo: Ed Mulholland This content is protected Middleweight Champion of the World Kelly Pavlik (33-0, 29 KOs) made a shocking announcement today at Cassese's MVR in Youngstown, Ohio. The champ, speaking in front of a standing room only crowd for a local press conference to announce his title defense against Gary Lockett (30-1, 21 KOs) on June 7th said, "I definitely want to go out with a bang. This is probably going to be my last fight. I know I said I wanted to defend my title numerous times, but you have to do what you have to do and I think I'm going to go into retirement after this fight." When asked why he's making the choice to retire, Pavlik playfully added, "Because it's April 1st!" This content is protected Tuesday, April 1 2008
I just read this. I was going to post a different headline though. Pavlik talks Lockett, Calzaghe and Wright. From the home town rag: http://vindy.com/news/2008/apr/02/pavlik-to-retire-april-fool/ I really didn't think JC was on his radar. Glad I am wrong though.:happy
Actually set up a while ago. Pavlik Sr. said he only wanted Kelly to go one or two fights past Taylor 1.
Man I LOVE the Winky statement: "There's a guy I'd love to smack around a little bit." Now put it with this one Pav made a month or so ago: "I'd love to fight a smaller guy who doesn't hit very hard." It's rare for Pavlik to talk smack about other fighters. Wright must have really pissed him off. Did you guys see the article where Pavlik talked about fighting as a heavyweight at some point before he retires? What do ya think? Could he do it? Boo
Well, it said they tried for that fight a 'couple hundred times' and got blown off. Now Winky is fairly DEMANDING the fight for the title no less. And he has had 3 fights at middle, last over a year ago. It's good to be king. He must feel he can carry the weight, but I don't know how effective he would be. Maybe he is looking at the current crop and thinking....
I will always think of Pavlik as the skinny kid I started following when no one knew who he was, but I knew one day he would beat Jermain Taylor to become the Middle wt. Champ. I look forward to him moving up to 168 & then to 175 one day. But thats it! I don't wanna see KP become a steroid bulked up freak at 215 lbs. that would have to fight some chump like Wlad. Let David Haye chop that guy down. Plus, KP said he wants to retire by the time he's 30 yrs. old. If Kelly can clean house @ 160, do the same @ 168 & then possibly win a Lt. HW Title, I think that will be enough to solidify his legacy as an ATG. But thats a long way off & many bodies must fall for that to happen. :!:
I remember giving you a hard time when the Bronco fight was coming up. You were one of Kelly's first fans around here that I remember.
Hey Trouble, are you another one of those guys who picked McKart to give Pavlik a boxing lesson? I know I was! I can pin point the exact moment that I became a pavlik fan: the lead right to the body in round 5!! Boo
