I'm picking Pavlik as a clear favorite against Williams, but man.. His hand speed against Espino was just terrible.. He reminded me like a fat heavyweight.. He was looking like an old George Foreman who has nothing but power in his punches.. Am I an idiot or is there some truth to this? Well gotta run, expecting the "flame train" to go by any minute now:dance
You are right. It is. Some times. Speed does not equal power. If so I swear to god Andre Dirrell would be the meanest bad boy out there. There's a reason I compared to Big Ol' George:deal
I noticed it too!! It seems as if he was punching under water! Pavlik was able to open up cause he knew he had a low caliber fighter infront of him! Pavlik looked OK, he got hit quite a bit!
Problem with the speed guys, they learn in the amateurs to 'score points'. They pull their punches so get into position to score another point. They never seem to switch to using it for power. Well, not always. I never saw Kelly as a amateur but accounts have him as winning with speed there. I can 'take a bullet' if someone throws it at me. From the barrel of a gun? Only difference in the bullet is "speed".
Yes, you're right to a certain extent. Speed does not equal power. You can use any number of equations to calculate different aspects of punching power - momentum (p) = mass (m) * velocity (v); Force (F) = mass (m) * acceleration (a); Work = force * distance; torque (T) = Force (F) * distance of moment arm (x); Power = force * time; Impulse = change in momentum; pressure = force/area. The list goes on. Speed doesn't equal power, but in all the Physics equations to derive something like punching power or force, speed is an integral factor either as speed, acceleration or as a part of the calculation for force. A slow punch with a certain mass behind it will always impart less force than a faster punch with the same mass. On the other hand a boxer that throws arm punches or pulls punches is putting less mass behind the punch and therefore landing with less force/momentum/pressure/torque/impulse/etc regardless of how much speed is used when compared to a punch traveling at the same speed with a full range of motion or with full hip/shoulder/arm rotation to place more mass behind the punch. In the above example, one can 'take a bullet' if it's thrown, but on the other side of the coin, if that bullet is a cannonball, and if it hits you at the same speed, it will do a lot of damage.
Not a very good analogy to the dynamics of boxing. If you get hit in the face with a dodgeball at 5 MPH, you'd probably be ok, but if you get hit in the face by a car going 5 MPH, it would probably smash your face. Speed is a factor in power, but it isn't the only factor. In fact, it isn't the main factor in calculating power. Technique, leverage, and force play a much bigger role in punching power.
Point is, IF Kelly was as slow as some of the haters claim he is then he wouldn't be getting the KO's he gets. He also uses it to better than most give him credit for defensively.
He's never been fast or diverse. He won't need either of these attributes to knock Paul Williams out.
Pavlik has average speed for an elite fighter...Handspeed is just middle of road really, not heaps slow but certainly not fast. Footspeed and reflexes are on the slower end of the spectrum. Again though this is compared to the elite today, the best around. Relative to them Kelly is not fast, just average. Of course he has other attributes that are well above average that keep him going at that level (though its been a while since he beat a fellow elite).
In the end it is about making the best of what you got. I can't/wouldn't argue the relative aspects that you have laid out. I've posted before, I like to watch fights back to back to get some idea of how fighters compare. I like to watch Pavlik/Talyor 2 to see Kelly's boxing ability. I watched that back to back with Rubio/Ornales twice and even I could tell that speed wise, Kelly was a cut above the 'second tier' guys. I'm just tired of people trying to make it sound as if Kelly is on the lower end of the B level guys when it comes to speed.
Hermit, your boy is slow just live with it. Jesus you are just as bad as the pac lovers. Btw I am no pavlik hater either I picked him against Hopkins.
"Slow" in this instance is a subjective measurement at best. I've often thought about trying to 'time' punches by slowing down film but that really doesn't even take the total bill of goods into account because it is just about impossible to judge "time it takes to land a meaningful punch from the moment the opportunity presents itself". Again. Simple physics. Speed is part of the power equation no matter how you slice and dice it.
