What evidence is there that Kessler is anything special? Pavlik is bigger than Kessler; he's taller and has more reach. Kessler's chin has never been tested, so you have no idea where it's at. His KO percentage and KO pedigree are light years behind Pavlik's so even comparing them is a joke. Kessler's defensive skills are rudimentary at best and he has weak accuracy on offense. You're talking about a guy that didn't even want to fight Miranda.
That's because Calzaghe had better options(Pavlik one of them) and Pavlik couldn't get anyone in the ring. Winky ducked that fight, Calzaghe took Jones instead, Abraham has to fight his mandatory so Pavlik had to settle with Hopkins who was the only one willing to accept the fight. Calzaghe had other options, Pavlik didn't and he wants to stay active. Not blaming Calzaghe for looking to make some big money before he retires, definitely not but that's the situation here.
Joe is a victim of his own mouth. Just follow the time line. Sept 29, 2007: Pavlik destroys Taylor while Joe looks on via sattelite. After the fight HBO interviews Calzaghe, and Calzaghe calls Pavlik out. Nov 3, 2007: JC beats Kessler, and continues to call out Pavlik. Before any other fights are made, and before JT says he'll excersize his rematch clause, Joe made a fight with BHop. All through the winter and early spring, up until Arum announces the Lockett fight, JC continues to Call Pavlik out. January 2008 on British TV Calzaghe says "Roy Jones was a great fighter, but he's not a great fighter now." He then proceeded to tell the interviewer he wanted to fight Pavlik provide Kelly won the rematch with JT. April 19, 2008: Calzaghe wins a split decision over BHop, proclaims himself a legend killer, and says he wants Roy Jones. He doesn't mention Pavlik. Just prior to the Lockett fight an interviewer asks Pavlik who he wants to fight next. With no hesitation whatsoever Pavlik says "Calzaghe." In the mean time Top Rank offers Joe 10 million pounds to fight Pavlik. June 7, 2008: Pavlik destroys Joe's stablemate, but Joe wasn't there. In the post fight press conference a reporter ask Pavlik who he wants next. Without hesitation Kelly says "Calzaghe. It's up to Arum and Duncan. If they tell me to fight Godzilla, I'll fight Godzilla." On or about June 12-13 2008 Calzaghe tells the South Wales Argus: "A lot of people would love to see it. However, at this point, I think it's unlikely. I'm not sure if Pavlik really wants to face me at the moment." Bob Arum, Team Pavlik, HBO, and Frank Warren, all ask Joe to remain true to his word, and fight Kelly Pavlik. Joe fired Frank, and entered negotiations with Roy Jones. You can interpret that any way you like, but I call it ducking, plain and simple. If it were Kelly who had been running off at the mouth, it would be different, but it was Joe that started it all.
ah..bhops is the guy who just landed the harder shots on calz before losing a close decision and that was at 170. who besides calzaghe is now a better match for pavlik? and why should a big mw in pavlik be looking for 154ers to fight? it just doesn't make sense that hopkins fights 'everyones top guy between 160-170' to a very close fight and all of a sudden he's a worthless senior citizen.atsch atsch atsch
If you are unware of Winky ducking Pavlik SEVERAL times, we're ALL laughing are asses off at how much you know!:yep
Some new Pavlik interview stuff here... "There's nothing you can really say or do; mainly, you gotta look at it like this - what else was out there?" says Pavlik. "Arthur Abraham's got a mandatory against Raul Marquez. Felix Sturm, nobody’s heard of him at all and I'm still going to take a beating no matter if I took that fight or not. Winky Wright is out there but Winky Wright hasn't fought in how long? He's old, he's done, he hasn't really beaten anybody. He has no power and he's ducked me for how many years, and especially in Youngstown, I've been calling him out for three years before I won the world title. He didn't want to do it. So now he's interested because his career is done and he wants a big money fight. This content is protected This content is protected . This content is protected ." "So the only fight out there which was a big one was Hopkins. If Calzaghe would've wiped the floor with Hopkins in the fight, then you could say, 'Well, Hopkins is old, he's done.' But Hopkins lost a very, very close fight. He dropped Calzaghe. So his name is still huge out there and that's the only other option that I had. There was nobody else with a bigger name than Hopkins that I could've fought." The fact he's facing the 43-year old Hopkins, who was well into his run as a middleweight titlist by the time Pavlik turned pro, is surprising to many observers. But not to Pavlik. "No, not at all," he claims. "They kept throwing names out there, throwing names out and this guy would fall out, this guy would fall out. Then they were talking about Paul Williams, this little welterweight. I'm like, 'Paul Williams? He's a 147-pounder; he wants to come up to middleweight? What's happening here?' And I thought Manny Pacquiao or somebody like that was coming next. Then I was at a charity event, I got the phone call and they said I was fighting Hopkins." "I want Calzaghe to win, I really do. I just want to fight him. Actually, I want to fight his dad first," he clarifies. But of course, he may have to get in line behind his own trainer, Jack Loew. "His dad is doing everything possible to not have that fight happen. But with Calzaghe and Jones nothing is impossible in that fight. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Roy Jones outpointed him. I'm being dead serious in that. I would not be a bit surprised. I'm hoping Calzaghe wins and I think he could win, but at the same time, if Calzaghe had a little bit of power with his pressure, then I'd say, 'Y'know what, Jones might end up like he did with Glen Johnson and Tarver,' but I just don't think Calzaghe has enough to really do that to Roy. I think Roy Jones might possibly drop Calzaghe in that fight." Pavlik believes that the beating he gave Gary Lockett in June - who just happened to be trained by Calzaghe's father - is what kept a matchup with his son from occurring. “ This content is protected . I think he's still shaking the cobwebs right now. Boxing for him, thank God for Joe, because his dad’s the one who's behind all this - it ain't Joe," he states. " This content is protected ."
Because Kelly Pavlik never wrote in a book or said in a press conference that he'd never fight Bernard Hopkins. Done deal.
