They'll be hundreds of weight divisions by this time next year. We'll see the first 20 weight world champion by the time Haymon's finished. lol
I must say I have mixed feelings about this On one hand, this is like a big "fu<k you" to these alphabet orgs... On the other, I've always felt a certain dislike towards Haymon and his ways. No doubt this will only tighten his grasp in boxing. But honestly this guy is such a genius that he is on the verge of having a firm control on ALL of boxing. He has a considerable stable of fighters, promoters don't have any pull on him, after his PBS deal networks would think twice about crossing him now, and the last piece of the puzzle, the blasted sanctioning organizations, will be totally worthless to him soon. Can't say I'll change my opinion of the guy, but making the alpha-belt groups obsolete sure scores some points for me.
The concept, I have no problem with. But he needs to get more top guys on board, or at least be open to having "outside" guys fight his guys. For example, it would appear everything is being done to make the Kovalev-Stevenson fight which is good to see. Remember, UFC and Pride competed for years before UFC became THE MMA organisation
Thread was started 04-06-15 Still nothing heard about these belts. Either it´s a well kept secret or just something that will not be happening any time soon.
There's other outfits trying to do this, there's boxing leagues around the world, one in Italy, and the World Series of Boxing. I think the boxing world is too set in their ways to change, especially in America.
This is terrible news, although not altogether unforeseen. Haymon is a smart man and in terms of his personal gain, this is likely the smartest move he could make. On top of muddying up the already alphabet heavy soup, I believe it will only further fracture the "political divide" going forward, making it even harder to get Haymon in with fighters from other networks (Kovalev/Stevenson etc). I too had no real issues with Haymon prior, but I don't like this at all.
