Jones the one middleweight who could cut it (Toney couldn't). And remember Jones only won an ABC title and didn't defend it.

holmes was excellent, the only problem was that he NEVER had anyone to prove it against, by the time he did, he was 2 old and 2 far gone to prove anything.

such a shame, larry will never get the right amount of respect cause he never really fought anyone.

The Easton Assasin was a great HW. Holmes had the BEST JAB of any HW, I've ever seen. Larry was a boxer/puncher and never really gets appreciated fully. Best ever??? Cant go quite that far but certainly would be a top 10 all-time HW, IMO.

Holmes was/is also an astute businessman who made the most of his profit from boxing and owns quite a bit of his hometown in Easton, pennsylvania. Holmes is worth a hell of a lot and has enjoyed more financial success than many, many, many other fighters:good

You can not only make a case for Holmes, but stronge case!!

Larry Holmes was a great fighter in his prime, and it's just hard to take someone to beat him at his best! He had the overall package of speed, agility, chin, power, heart, toughness, ring smarts! He was also very technically, and fundamentally sound. Excellent footwork, and anyone who watch his career would know this. I always looked at holmes as an upgraded Joe Louis w/a Super Jab, and more speed! There wasn't an area he was lacking in:nono It's not his fault the era he fought in, or the fact that ppl weren't to accepting of a new heavyweight king especially after he beat Ali!

Head to head it would be hard to pick against all his abilities! Here's some names!

vs Ali - He had the size and skillset to keep up, and even better jab. He had more more power, but Ali had so much speed, and better footwork so it's hard to call. We all know the sparring stories!

Vs Frazier - He keep Frazier at bay all night w/that quick stiff, hard jab, and fire right hands behind them! He take Joe to a decision, and hell IMO he could stop him!

Vs Foreman - Big George would be to slow, and those punches he throws would be easily countered. Give it to Larry

Vs Louis - This would be interesting, but I see again Larry's jab and speed getting to Joe, and he just would get beat to the punch all night!

    Vs Marciano - No contest!:nono

Vs Liston - Liston's style like Foremans would play right into Larry's and he would lose easily!

Vs Holyfield - He would ding Holyfield who seemed to forget that defense was part of the game, and definately had the power to stop him!

Vs Lewis - This would be a good one, but again Larry had a better, quicker jab, and he would control the fight, and eventually set up that right hand bomb!

This is all my thoughts, and only my opinion. I've always thought highly of Holmes the fighter, and really thought there wasn't to many if any who could beat him in his prime! He's was and still is overlooked as a great fighter because of names like Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, & Ali, Louis, and Foreman! He was in between them, but possibly the best of the best!

    That's my take!!

Peter Manfredo is no worse than some of the fighters the likes of Charles beat, I sincerely hope you were laughing at and not with his post. Look at this resume http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=9012 - don't tell me Calzaghe couldn't do better.

Larry is definitely in the top 10, maybe top 5 heavys of all-time.Great Jab and recuperative powers.Only two strikes against him, one not really his fault.

    1) He didn't unify the belt.
    2) After 1982, he really didn't make an effort to fight the contenders that were really good, i.e Thomas, Coetzee, and definitely Greg Page.:yep

Larry Holmes is certainly one of the most UNDER-RATED Heavyweight Champions ever. I think the reason why he is so looked down upon was because he was supposed to be Ali's successor and he failed. Not that there is anything wrong with that because who the hell can succeed Muhammad Ali? Tough act to follow.

I don't know about anyone else but he should be an ATG just for that drop kick off the car to Trevor Berbick HAHAHAHA
