yeah, bull****, whatever. Roy was great because of his unnatural athletic ability, plain and simple. Thats why now that hes gotten older, and he still tries to do his old thing, it doesnt work as well. again, im not saying he has no technique, but i dont think unorthodox is really considered a mainstream fighting style. Mayweather is a better boxer, but not a better fighter IMO.
i would have to disagree,...Mayweather is a defensive first fighter..RJJ b4 he went to HW was ALL Offense all the time.....did u forget he knoked out Glen Kelly with his hands way behind his back?:bbb :bbb ..lol..if that aint power..then IDK what is
im not questioning his power, and mayweather was not a defensive fighter at lower weights either, he brutalized manfredy, corrales, and hernandez to name a few.
How many times do we need to go through this on ESB? I think KG has already pointed out the falacy of your thinking. If you really attribute all of his abilities to "unnatural athletic ability" you either don't know Jones or don't know what you were watching when he fought.
ive never heard a professional boxing scribe talk about RJJ's boxing skill, just the athletic ability. i grew up watching him, i know my ****, and this is my opinion. ive never once said he has no technique, im just saying his traditional boxing skills are not as good as mayweather.
You rarely hear them talk about his power either, mostly his speed. But it is nearly as impressive. They talk about his athleticism because it was unreal compared to everyone else. His skill level while very high, had been seen before. I grew up watching him as well and I know this sport well enough to know that the things I listed have little to do with athleticism. During his matches you could often hear the announcers talking about his in ring IQ. His ability to adjust and counter were unreal.
So to you orthodox > unorthodox? Tell that to Ali..... No, more textbook means just what is says. More textbook as in more orthodox. Not more skilled. Yes Mayweather can open up when he wants. Not like Jones.
he never really had to adjust in his prime. i agree, counter punching is a skill, and he was a good ring general. but his style, the way he boxed, does not work unless your him. look at Kendall Holt, he tries to fight like Roy, but he is not half as naturally gifted, so he has been KO'd in one round and gone life and death with Ricardo Torres. Jason Litzau is kinda the same to. Mayweather, has almost as much god given talent, and i think he will have more longevity because he doesnt just rely on those gifts, much like Ali before him.
