You have no proof of that. The second Cotto fight he busted Cotto up to a degree Eman Steward thought if they let it go one that Tony was gonna stop him just like the first time.
Cotto was in complete control of the rematch, there was no way in hell a blind margarito was going to turn anything around in one round. He lost nearly every single round.
Volume means less than nothing if you are hitting nothing, and that is ALL someone as slow as Margarito would be hitting. Mayweather isn't known for being the best defensive boxer in this generation and possibly the last 3 or 4 generations of fighters, because people LIKE him.
Did Stewatd say that? Strange. Cotto was breathing a bit hard from all the punching and moving around, but Margarito had not landed much at all while receiving a tremendous beating. He showed an incredible chin when not being hurt by Cotto's punches.
In the first fight Margarito took a number of rounds before he finally wore Cotto down, with wraps. In the rematch he simply wasn't going to wear Cotto down at all, definitely not in 3 minutes. Cotto was tired but had enough in the tank to last 3 minutes against a one eye margarito. All this Margarito nearly had him has become a bit of an exaggerated lie. Regarding Manny Steward, i dont think he ever made that comment. But if he did, you have to consider his agenda, Cotto had previously sacked Steward prior to this fight.
The old walking through punches technique? Williams lost to Quintana and Margarito was getting schooled by Cotto in the first 5, was dominated by Mosley and Cotto in the rematch. They would have been live bodies but wouldn't have pulled it off. To fight Margarito Floyd would have had to resign with Arum and kiss a DLH fight goodbye. The supposed 8million was part of a 3 fight deal with Arum, which would see Floyd net 21million against Margarito, Cotto and Hatton. Arum made it clear he didn't want Mayweather Delahoya as he'd only be managing 1 side of the fight (sound familiar?). Floyd netted more than double that against Baldomir, DLH and Hatton. Margarito/Arum were actually offered a Mayweather fight on Mayweather's terms though and turned it down. All that's on record if you want to read up on it.
It has served Margarito quite well against hard, sharp punching fighters such as Martinez and Cotto (although illegal wraps in all probability came into play against Cotto). It served Frazier well in FOTC. In a way it also served Foreman well against Frazier - not that he ate many punches, but when he felt he could handle whatever Joe threw at him he cut loose with abandon and the rest is history. And you box, so you probably know that one of the most discouraging things that can happen is when someone takes your best shot and doesn't blink. But I agree with you that Floyd would seen it through anyhow. Well, if he had a bit of an off-night like the first fight against Maidana I think both Margarito and Williams could have made it interesting.
Why are people comparing the 37 year old Mayweather who fought Maidana, with the 29 year old one that humiliated Baldomir, when that is the time the Mayweather haters claim he ducked Margarito? And they say they don't have an agenda. Yeah right.
That is a pretty good point. I think Floyd has aged very well, but, yeah, he has probably lost some spring in his step even at WW.
A lazy reply by myself and it does happen to a degree but it didn't work out too well against the admittedly harder hitting Mosley and it wasn't really working against Cotto until Cotto tired and went into a shell and it didn't really work against Williams. I don't think Floyd's punches are quite as easy to walk through as some people tend to think. Hatton thought he could walk through Mayweather's punches and got ko'd. Margarito at his best did have great stamina and the handwrap issue is something you have to bear in mind although it didn't work against Williams for him. I thought Floyd looked old against Maidana too. Since his first retirement he lost a step and slowed.
That is true. But I do feel that Williams and Margarito were the ones who would pose him the most problems. But that's not the same as saying he ducked them and would have lost. If the money was right I don't think he'd have much hesitation in facing any of them and he'd be the clear favorite imo. Just playing around with the thought of how such fights might have looked.
Floyd knew he would lose to both and that's why he never fought Tony or Paul. Haymon protected Floyd.
