Both top trainers. I honestly believe the reason mayweather can fight without any instruction is because of how they ve trained him from youth up. Its the boxing/reflex training. Floyds throwing them punches on reflexes thats why no one can beat him. And the credit has to go to the both of them. But in terms of corner work the uncles far the better. The corner will fall apart with senior in it if floyd goes through crisis. Senior will turn on him. Wheras the uncle will keep things calm.

I like Sr's defensive coaching, and Roger's offensive coaching. A healthy combination of the two would be good.

By the time a fighter is in his mid thirties he knows what to do and how to do it or he doesn't and can't. I think the corner is more important for younger fighters. What someone could possibly tell Bernard Hopkins that would make a difference at this point is beyond me.

At this point in his career, I would say Sr.

IMO, Senior's focus on defense keeps PBF sharp in the ring and keeps him rooted in the fundamentals of the style that made him successful. Also, I think there's more evidence of Sr's in-fight advice (for Mayweather and even Dawson) being useful and relevant.

And in spite of all the problems between the two, I would never discount the trust bond between a father trainer and son. Hell, even confidence shook RJJ turned back to Big Roy for that last Tarver fight.

His dad was in jail from the time Floyd Jr. was 16 to 21. He taught him before that and Floyd Jr. was a great amateur then as well.

In-fight advice might be the least important (while most transparent) part of the job, though.

    :think

Yeah, Floyd Sr did train Hatton and work the corner for that one.

EDIT: This thread is too interesting. In hindsight, if the Floyd/Pac fight had taken place years ago, then Uncle Roger probably would've been working Jr's corner.

I recall the time when Diego Corrales was being regarded as a very dangerous fight for Jr. Floyd Sr was almost pleading for his son not to fight Corrales without him back then. That fight ended up being a total domination. (R.I.P. Diego Corrales)

It probably makes no difference, but I always thought Roger was the better trainer myself.

Not sure how you can blame Sr for that fight, Hatton was overtrained because he went off training by himself during rest time without Sr's knowledge/permission.

Being overtrained was key to him being so underwhelming/physically weak in the fight.

He was also very complacent and did not listen to Sr's advice/strategy at all. He didn't box, he went in there trying to overpower Pac and it didn't work out at all and that's why he suffered those early knockdowns.

It was Ricky's business entirely that he lost that fight, no one else's.

He only has himself to blame. I think he knows it too and that's why he went into serious depression.

He knew he made serious errors leading up to the fight and during that fight. It was all on him. :deal

That and Pacquiao is twice the boxer he is and would've whipped Hatton's ass no matter what.
