peak frazier vs peak marciano

  1. great words of your link

it is for the guys who said that frazier did not have a good chin:

I don’t count his two knockouts to George Foreman as being a sign of having a weak chin. A prime Foreman could have done the same to any Heavyweight in history who came right at him.

Although a toss up, I am inclined to taking the Frazier of FOTC over the Marciano who defeated Walcott, as I am assuming that these were the peak versions of these two men. Rocky's chin, power, two fisted attack and relentless work ethic would make him an extremely formidable opponent for smoke, and could potentially even beat him.. The deciding factor for me however, is that Joe's handspeed, upper body movement and ripping left hooks would make for stylistic troubles against the rock.. he was also the larger of the two men, and it was mainly bigger guys who troubled Frazier, whereas smaller guys typically got eaten up... As for power, Marciano will always receive the popular vote for being the harder of the two hitters, but I'm not so sure that the difference is as far as some think... Both men scored most of their knockouts or stoppages by wearing down their opponents over time and through an accumulation of shots, more so than using the sort of one punch power variety that men like Tyson or Shavers had... Furthermore, it is arguable that Joe faced guys who were a tad more durable than some of the men the Rock faced.

    2. I edited my comment, so you can relax.

  10. cangrejo in english = crab

I think Magoo nailed it. A brutal war for however long it lasts but I think Frazier wins in the later rounds...say the 11th thru the 13th. Handspeed and generally faster workrate wins the day.

I recently re-watched Marciano vs Layne and Louis and that only reiterated my belief that Marciano would beat Frazier. It would be a hellacious war, but I feel that Marciano's two-fisted power, stamina, and lower center of gravity would win over the day. Frazier had trouble with his left to the body head against a sort of short kind of opponent in Terry Daniels. He commented on this. Marciano nullified Layne's left, and his dipping crouch made him a difficult target to hit. Obviously Rex Layne isn't Joe Frazier... but I was more than enough impressed with Marciano's skills and ability inside. I've always thought that Marciano liked launching from a distance even with his 67 to 68 inch reach. But he's more than comfortable at this point of his career when Layne crowded him. He really busted him up...

Goldman always loved Rocky's chances when fighters came toward him. He felt that that was hazardous, and used it as one of his reasoning as to why a prime Louis would've lost worse than an older one (Obviously probably not true. But there's a point to that argument).

I'd take Rocky by a decision. I just think Rocky's a lot better than Oscar Bonavena.

Marciano by ko is my pick. Hit harder with both hands, took better shot. Pace wise he had advantage also. They were not that far apart in size either. Marciano also fought in time when many guys fought on inside a lot,and he exceled, frazier was inside fighter in time when that style had dissapearded in heavyweights.
