Peak Joe Bugner Versus Peak Jerry Quarry

Quarry stops him; he had better wins, whereas Bugner didn't exactly distinguish himself during his era...

 

I got bugner. Quarry was great against flatfooted brawlers with defensive flaws and lack of speed, because he had a time and space to counter them while those guys were coming forward. Prime example of this are quarrys fights against lyle and shavers. However he was far less effective against outside boxers like ali, machen and ellis. Because those guys had great footwork, jabs and lateral movement which neutralised quarrys counterpunching ability. In other words because of their constant movement he couldn't catch them cleanly or cut the ring off. Quarrys footwork while coming forward is kinda weak. Thats why i have bugner outboxing him and winning by UD, because bugner had those atributes to cause him a massive problems.

 

I think Bugner is a bit of bad style match up for Quarry.

Quarry is a counter puncher who liked fighters to come towards him.

Bugner on the other hand is a solid boxer who's considerably bigger with a much longer reach.

I think Bugner outpoints him behind the jab in a bit of an upset.

 

Bugner had the ability to beat Quarry by decision provided he fought up to the best of his ability and is busy enough. Otherwise Jerry outworks him.

 

Jerry caught Lyle and Shavers in their first big fights. shavers had Ellis but was over so fast not much experience gained. Bugner was still a bit green whhen he was shocked by Bodell.

 

Quarry

 

Quarry’s problem was simple. He had pretty good skills as a standup boxer puncher except he was by modern standards short with a very short reach for a heavyweight. That style needs tall long arms fast on your feet to be most effective. But his style was wrong for his physical limitations. Guys with those dimensions usually come in out of a crouch bobbing and weaving. He was very vulnerable to being jabbed because of his short reach and standup style yet unimposing height. Even Chuvalos game plan was to jab him which he did with success.
