i think bowe has too much size and power for liston, who used to be a bigger, stronger man in his time... he would be in for a surprise against bowe

I think Bowe simply has not the mindset to beat a Prime Liston.

Yeah , Bowe is a lot heavier than Sonny.
But I still dont think the size advantage means Its a guaranteed win for him .
We are talkin about Sonny Liston here, the man who had a reputation of breaking facial bones and teeth with just his jab alone. Sonny definitely has enough firepower and skill to get the much bigger Bowes respect. Its not like he will simply just walk threw Sonny just because he is bigger. 50/50 fight IMHO but im picking Sonny to get the victory but like i said in my post earlier i would not be surprised one bit if Bowe knocks Liston out. Riddick Bowe was a solid HW fighter and i have not forgotten that.

This match-up is all wrong for Bowe. Sonny hit harder (quite a bit harder, I suspect), had a better jab and fought at a more relentless pace. It's a breaking-down process that rolls in Liston's favor.

Bowe had heart, if not dedication, and lasts the full route to lose a UD.

You really have no evidence that liston hits harder, and considering the fact he was slower and smaller than Bowe, i would say its the opposite way.

Also bowe knocked out much bigger opponents in a equally devastating fashion

Good post, although i would make bowe a clear favorite... Sonny has a punchers chance imo

We know what those who faced Liston said and what those who faced Bowe said.

One of Liston`s sparring partners said he used to hit so hard he knocked the stuffing out of the headgear. Dundee scouted Liston and said he knocked a guy`s teeth out with a jab.

I'm leaning towards Liston by virtue of the fact that Bowe had poor defense and was susceptible to strait jabs. Sonny Liston had one of the very best heavyweight jabs of all time with plenty of wingspan to make it land and power behind it. It wouldn't be pretty or easy however. Bowe had a very tough inside fighting game with loads of power himself to go with a solid chin and a noticeable size advantage over Sonny.. It's any man's fight but styles favor Liston in my humble opinion.

And the guy who beat him and knocked him down was 205 pounds.

Yeah, and big bad Sonny was tko'ed/quit and ko'ed by a 205 pound green loudmouth who could not crack a egg at that time of his career and was totally unproven.

Liston never ever fought a skilled tough as nails Super heavy like Bowe, granted Bowe's career was short but when prime, trained and motivated he was a force.

I also bet my bottom dollar if Futch could pick either one as a trainer he would pick Bowe.

Liston was slowwwww......it is one thing knocking over skinny chinless wonders , with all good folklore attached of "breaking teeth and Bone" or battling with the Journeyman of all Journeyman Williams.......as a matter of fact if the going gets tough Liston will pack it in as he had proven before and doing a Golata on the stool or gets counted out.

Chin? Old Foreman, totally shot Holyfield and Bowe and the Tyson impersonator who fought Lewis were NEVER KO'ed COLD even at advanced age like Sonny was...........I am not sold on his chin against genuine SuperHeavies who can crack.

holyfield was roided 217 when he beat bowe, fighting a fight of his life, and won a disputable decision... he knocked down tyson and mercer also, and is one of the toughest hw boxers ever to step in a ring.

also bowe past prime ate everything golota had plus low blows and was still standing, unlike liston who got knocked out cold by 200 pounder, former lhw with 50 % knockout.

you're a good poster in general, too bad you're a bowe hater so can't be objective when it comes to him

Did Liston "pack it in"? when his jaw was broken? I would think someone as light on the left side as your describing wouldn't have hesitated to shut it down. Also I don't believe his power was just "folklore". Liston`s power was real. I agree he wasn't that fast. He had average speed but moved pretty well.

With that said I`m not writing off Bowe here. He had size and the tools to give anyone a hard night when he was in shape and focused.
