They did. Holyfield did it all the time, against everyone, until he got older. It’s like you don’t watch boxing.
He didn’t, its nothing more than a stupid narrative people that ACTUALLY don’t watch his matches create. Holyfield fought the wrong fight against Foreman but he didn’t willingly take punches, no one at that level does, hell he himself said that Foreman’s tricky timing was what throwing him off. You think you are so smart but you argue using nothing but bias and feelings, Foreman was good bro, deal with it.
First of all, I didn’t intend to get you all up in your feelings, and I apologize for that. Second of all, when Holyfield actually respected the opponent, like he did against Lewis, was very careful to not get drilled. Against lesser opponents like Cooper, Stewart, and Foreman, he didn’t mind getting a taste of their power because he knew he’d win anyway.
You are the one who loses control whenever Foreman is mentioned. Lewis literally couldn’t miss Holy in their first match, and Holy didn’t randomly decided to defend himself in the rematch either, he just used their previous match to improve his performance with adjustments and still came up short. I can’t believe I actually need to tell someone this but no, former undisputed CW / HW champion and a bonafide ATG boxer did not take punches to the face on purpose. Especially against Foreman who had nothing but power to bring against Holyfield. He used the wrong strategy but he wasnt taking punches for the fun of it, Holyfield spent the entirety of the last round clinching with Foreman because by his own admission he was afraid that Foreman could randomly chin him if he had the chance.
The earliest point the "rust" was gone. Foremans not an Archie Moore who got better with age thats just modernists trying to reconcile his success to their worldview.
