Guevara's brother Alberto just took a unanimous decision (I overheard two of the scores, 97-92 and 95-94) over previously unbeaten Jonathan Vidal in what looked to have been an epic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico battle.

They were trading hooks and uppercuts galore in the 9th and 10th and both frequently looked on the verge of being KTFO but kept plugging away.

It was for the vacant WBC International bantamweight title, but it only went 10. (not 12 as Boxrec lists it as having been scheduled) That particular title has always been contested over twelve. :think

 

Earlier on the undercard, Ivan Morales (youngest brother of Erik Morales) beat Alejandro Morales (no relation) by UD in what reportedly was a boring match in which he looked a little flat cruising to victory.

This is for the WBC Silver light flyweight championship. (which Pedro Guevara was the first person to ever hold, in 2010 - defending once in 2011 with a draw against Rodriguez before getting stripped and finally regaining it this March)

 

Round 1

Guevara sprints to the Corona logo, asserting himself quickly with the left jab while bouncing in place with his knees. Rodriguez turns and sidesteps, peeking out between his gloves and trying a double jab with a forward thrust of his lead foot. Guevara bounces to his left and drops jabs on the shorter man. Overhand right falling in by Guevara. Rodriguez tries to time him with a right hand but is a half-beat late. Jabs downstairs by Guevara. Rodriguez watches from outside, then swoops in with a high right hand, blocked. Fake jabs by Rodriguez, aiming low, then a big looping right up top. Double left hook by Guevara running around Rodriguez's right side. Hard jabs to the body by Guevara, landing on the arm but knocking Rodriguez back.

Round 2

Guevara is jabbing down at Rodriguez's forehead, jogging left, moving in with more hard jabs and darting out. Guevara is finding a rhythm with the long 1-2 from outside, drilling Rodriguez with it and then reaching down with big left hooks to the body. Rodriguez can't narrow the gap without shipping major punishment, and doesn't look too comfortable on the outside either. 1-2-3 by Guevara as Rodriguez puts in a tentative right hand lead. Rodriguez backs up and regroups, watching through his gloves and circling a little with short easy steps. 1-2 by Guevara, sick of waiting on him. Rodriguez covers up and tosses a discouraging right hand, not looking to engage.

Rollercoaster year for the little firebrand, Dragoncito Rodriguez.

Last September he made good on an inexplicable title shot against Nkosinathi Joyi, upsetting the IBF champ from South Africa by KO and taking his belt - only to flip it to Katsunari Takayama in his first defense.

Now he seems on his way to losing a rematch with his domestic rival, putting him on an 0-2 skid with a 15-8-4 overall mark and unlikely to get near a world title again despite having one a few months ago...

Guevara is still putting his ones, twos and threes together from outside and catching Rodriguez with the long straight left jab on the kisser. Rodriguez is trying to answer with his own 1-2 but keeps hitting the guard of Guevara, who then jumps back with a few quick hops to reset and get back on the jab.

Round 4

Rodriguez hurtles in with chopping overhand lefts and rights. Guevara puts out his forearms, held in a vertical line with elbow pointing at the Corona logo and fists at the ceiling, elbows bent at square corner angles. Guevara is catching Rodriguez on the way in with 1-2s on the face and big left hooks to the gut. Rodriguez has plenty of guts to put on the line as he leaps in at the taller man with midair left hooks and big windmilling rights.

Round 5

Guevara is boxing from the outside, raking his jab down against Rodriguez's brow and dropping long right crosses on his crown. Rodriguez is zooming in from different angles trying to get past the jab and 1-2 but can't. Guevara has been landing the right hand so often and so hard that its tape has busted loose at the wrist. The ref waits for a break in the action to send him to his corner to fix it. Time in. Rodriguez moves in with an overhand right, misses and eats a counter jab. Rodriguez stumbles to his left and keeps throwing at close range, pushed back by a 1-2 as Guevara circles out. Left hook to the body by Guevara, stopping a rush by Rodriguez.

Round 6

Rodriguez is running in with right hands and causing Guevara to scoot back in alarm. Rodriguez begins to jab as he approaches to hide the right hand and then slam it down in the crook between Guevara's shoulder and neck as he backs up. Counter 1-2s score for Guevara as he flees. Guevara waits and shovels a left hook into Rodriguez's side as he gallops in nonchalantly. 1-2-3-2 to the face by Guevara. Rodriguez has rediscovered his left hook and is delivering it with big whipping motions lifting him off his feet as they circle each other, coming pretty close but not quite planting it on Guevara. (though he will have bruises on his biceps tomorrow morning)

10-9 Guevara but Rodriguez made it more his kind of fight.

Round 7

Guevara is jabbing, running in reverse a few paces, clawing at Rodriguez's chest with right uppercuts standing in for a moment, rinsing and repeating. Rodriguez throws looping lefts and puts in the left hook behind them while keeping in lock step with Guevara (more or less, without Guevara's fluidity of movement). Uppercut combo rattled off Rodriguez's face. He answers with a left and right hook into the outermost parts of the ribcage.
