Ronald Mark Mendoza Vicelles vs. Jerven Masucol Mama, 10 rounds @ super flyweight

 

This was scheduled originally to be a light fly contest. Mark "Thunder" Vicelles missed the weight by 1¾lbs, but at least he still came in under the flyweight limit the next division up. Jerven "Iron Fist" Mama only just barely made super fly, 6¼ over the light fly limit!

 

Thunder enters 13-0-1 (8) and Iron Fist is 12-0-1 (7). Either someone's 0 has got to go today, or they each get a "2" in the draw column.

Round 1

High jabs and low slung lefts by Vicelles, staying outside and boxing "tall" despite giving up an inch to Mama. Quick straight right hand leads on the brow from Mama, picking his spots and jumping in on the more stationary and counter-focused Vicelles. Mama doing a good job planting his left glove up by his ear to block Vicelles' counter right hooks as he swarms in to land underhanded body thumps before resetting at range to snipe with rights.

Round 2

Vicelles is leading the jab exchanges, but not betraying his position, leaning his upper body inside when throwing from mid-range but keeping his feet anchored slightly more than shoulder width apart. Their heads clash, typical orthodox vs. southpaw type stuff, Mama gets the worst of it and complains, and the ref beckons each man to just be careful and carry on. Vicelles is picking off Mama's left jabs now by shooting his right jab into them, and then burying a left cross in the belly. HUGE looping left by Vicelles as they're stepping around each other in the pocket misses, nearly turning himself 180°. He redeems himself moments later by feinting with the jab and then placing a nice left hand lead between Mama's eyes. Mama carves his way inside with a 1-2 but Vicelles takes it on his right forearm before uncorking a massive counter left uppercut that skids along Mama's chest and elicits oohs and ahhs from the commentators - had it landed on the chin, might have really been something.

Round 3

More head clashes, mostly when either man darts in with a high sweeping hook at the head. Vicelles is painting Mama's face with the southpaw jab, and bracing against him taking counteroffensive moves by using his right toe like a doorstopper, not quite stepping on Mama's leading left foot, but slid up against it to prevent a quick first step as Vicelles leans back after scoring. Bursts of aggression from Mama, throwing hard 1-2s up top, but he can't reach.

Round 4

Vicelles is countering with the single right jab or straight left as Mama carries both arms low and uses rising jab feints off the waist to advance. Mama throws a missing combination and slips on the canvas, nearly throating himself on the bottom rope. Vicelles laughingly reaches down to assist him up. Nice shoulder roll defense by the southpaw, catching Mama now with some right check hooks over the left jab.

10-9 Vicelles, clearest round so far, Mama only got a few tickles downstairs

Round 5

Vicelles is coming on strong now, backing Mama into the ropes and unloading straight combos. Mama spins out to reverse positions but then retreats into the opposite corner. Vicious right hooks on the body from Vicelles - the commentator incorrectly calls it a "liver shot", apparently having flunked human anatomy (those punches landed on the left side of Mama's torso; his liver would be on the other side) - keeping Mama pinned. Vicelles alternating between a high guard and Philly shell, using both effectively while stalking, peppering Mama with light jabs, and baiting him to counter Mama's counters. As things settle down with a minute left, Vicelles again misses with a corkscrew left - really not his best punch, in terms of accuracy, he's rolling a donut with is so far. Mama dives in with a right on the body, partially stuffed down with the bottom of Vicelles' left arm.

Round 6

Vicelles is taking a round off now to recoup. Mama being more cautious in his approach, doubling the jab up top, rattling it against the guard and then either waving a lulling light left hook or placing a sharp right hand on the forehead of Vicelles. Late in the round, Vicelles does pick it up a bit and lands a blocked combo that backs Mama up into a corner, where he slips once more and falls onto the canvas - Vicelles' team immediately starts calling for a knockdown but the ref correctly doesn't rule it as one.

Round 7

Vicelles is turning Mama's head with stiff right jabs, both slouching over with their fists at their hips to conserve strength as the miles add up. Ten seconds or more are passing in between each meaningful sortie by either man, lots of posing and watching, pawing jabs meant to show they're still alert more than score. Mama jumps in and claps a few grazing body shots, but is held at bay with the southpaw 1-2 in the closing moments.

Round 8

Vicelles is on the backfoot again with lot output as in the 6th. Mama crowds him and they end up clung together until the ref orders a break. Mama expending lots of energy hopping around, shifting his weight from lead to rear foot, but overly wary of counters and not opening up beyond the odd mid-air jab. Overthinking in a round he could be stealing as Vicelles seems to be taking another off. A minute left and Vicelles wakes up and starts to spam the left cross, throwing it hard with full body follow-through behind a weak set-up jab. Mama tries a point-blank hooking combo after shoving Vicelles into the ropes but with Vicelles' goalposts up all Mama really accomplishes is banging his forearms into Vicelles'.

Round 9

Vicelles is coiled to strike, letting Mama initiate, and punishing him with a straight left or right hook every time Mama reaches in. All of Mama's head shots get him countered flush. He switches tacks and starts pummeling the body while charging in with his face down and neck arched, but is warned for straying too low. He keeps ripping uppercuts, a little below the belt with no further warning. Vicelles stands in front of him and holds both fists squarely in front of his face, inviting him in. Vicelles has a cut left eye. Mama doing his best to worsen it but can't touch him with anything upstairs without getting clocked himself. Speaking of which, HUGE right check hook, visibly jars Mama, spinning his jaw quarter-way round, but he shakes it off well and keeps attacking.

Judges might have liked Mama's aggression in the ninth, but it was mostly ineffective - and Vicelles' counter-punches were on point, especially that big right hook late. Best punch of the fight.
