Vicelles is throwing 1-2s off the ropes and Mama gets him in a stranglehold, pinning Vicelles' neck between his arms. Very sloppy action now, and Mama is again warned for a low blow. Vicelles given some recovery tme and the ref seems on the verge of deducting a point from Mama, telling him after calling time in "no low blow no low blow no low blow" (yes, repeated thrice for emphasis...and then just ten seconds later "no low blow no low blow" again, in a vexed parental voice). Insane amount of holding now by Mama, who is just a fouling machine in this last frame. He is also the only man throwing punches, however - most of them rabbit punches in the clinch, but he is going for it, trying his damnedest to get a late KO perhaps knowing he ought to be down on points. Huge telegraphed lead rights by Mama up top, and then YET ANOTHER flagrantly low blow. The ref is fed up and issues a two point deduction to Mama. Vicelles walks it off for about ten seconds and then indicates he's ready to continue. Mama clasps onto him for some holding & hitting until the ref pries him off. Mama feathers a few left jabs up into Vicelles' face, hoping to blind him to a big right hand. Vicelles is wise to his plan, though, and does the same with his right jab, grazing with a warning left cross. Mama doesn't heed the warning, repeating his strategy - and the next left cross lands ON THE BUTTON, sending him flying onto his back with ten seconds left in the match. Down and out!

Beauty of a shot, and credit to Powcast Sports, they immediately show replays from like five different angles.

"Boomshakalaka!" says the commentator. Taking me back to my youth with NBA Jam.

 

The broadcasters are suggesting that could have been FOTY.

Eh...it was pretty fun, but at best it was maybe Pinoy domestic FOTY.

 

Penitente Gesmundo Apolinar II vs. Jess Rhey Talara Waminal, 12 rounds @ featherweight

 

This is for the vacant OPBF Silver title.

 

Apolinar, like Vicelles, is nicknamed "Thunder". He comes in with a 14-1 record. Waminal aka "Wanman", is 14-3-1. Both men have scored eight of their fourteen victories by stoppage.

 

J.R. Waminal has the blue trunks with the white outer leg stripe; Pete Apolinar has silver with black.

 

Cagey opener, both studying each other, lots of twitching and pulling shots - but there are spurts of sudden violent activity, both scoring fast combos, especially on the body.

10-9 Apolinar, close

 

Much less action that in the co-main event, but a good tactical boxing match. These featherweights have better and more accurate striking technique but are less willing to risk getting hit than were their fly-range counterparts.

 

30-27 Apolinar, just slightly better in every respect. Waminal isn't getting totally outclassed, just can't penetrate the defense very consistently and is getting countered with interest to body and head whenever he does start firing.

 

Straight to point deduction without a clear warning from Waminal for a low blow. This isn't the same ref from Vicelles vs. Mama, but he was a judge for that fight (and the ref for that one is judging this one), so the patience of the officials is obviously now very thin when it comes to fouling.

That puts him in a deep hole a third of the way into the contest, 40-35. Apolinar just laying on the ropes blocking or slipping everything Waminal throws and then chasing him out with straight punches as he's retracting, or crossing his arms diagonally and tackling in low to lock horns for some infighting (which he also gets the better of with faster hands scoring downstairs)

One very good fight and one decent. Going forward I'll be keeping an eye out for both Thunders for sure.
