Penn is past his prime...agreed ?

As what just not as good as Frankie Edgar ? The only thing about him that was truely bad tonight was the fact he was gassing 2 rounds in nothing new there.

 

He's being called overrated because well.........he was overrated...

His standup was called some of the best in the sport - It didnt look like it either time vs Edgar, way too slow and limated.

His BJJ is talked up as the best in the sport - It didnt look like it either given that he threatened no subs or sweeps on edgar.

Getting finished quickly the way GSP or Fedor did is one thing, having it shown over 10 rounds you have nothing to threaten an opponant with is quiet another.

Still an exellent LW of course but the god who was way above everyone else? sorry that BJ never existed, it was just the product of promoter and fan hype. He'd lost numerous times before and his wins over Sherk and Kenny were hardly as dominant as they were painted as afterwards, he was being handed wins over his rivals without even having to face them.

 

No, out of those options I'd say it was down to styles. BJ had no answer for Edgars movement and speed and he was outboxed handily. He may be a little past his peak but this loss is more down to Frankie Edgar's skills and gameplan imo.

 

Edgar just had his number.Great effort from the little fella.I can personally seeing him hold the title for sometime..

Bj needs to pull his head out of his own arse and get back to reality..Though i may be a little harsh on BJ as the truth could be he has just lost the eye of the tiger..The hunger..

I must admit that is what I was thinking as the fight unfolded. Another thing, BJ has never been one to get subs from the ground, as some of the best BJJ exponents are able to. You're right, both his boxing and BJJ looked very average today. Also his takedown defence looked weak. But I think it's probably more to do with him being past his best and with Edgar's style, than him being overrated.

The only two fights he looked good in recently were against TUF fighters Kenny and Diego. Those two guys are overly reliant on their standup, which is grossly overrated (mostly by themselves). A good boxer like Penn was always going to expose them.

I think he is past-prime... as far as being a boxer in MMA goes. I don't think a nippy little B-class guy like Edgar could've beaten BJ a couple of years ago, no way. Maynard will dominate Edgar again.

But as guys get older, they need to change it up. Maybe they need to change it up because they can no longer perform on their A-game physically anymore, maybe they need to change it up because their game has become stale and predictable, but fighters need to evolve.

BJ has had great success fighting like this for some time now, but Edgar worked it out and deserved the win. Now it's time for BJ to either retire, or reinvent himself somewhat.

I'd like to see him go back to BJJ, and use his boxing as a way of taking fights to the ground. That would be very interesting. He is still an ATG, but I think he needs to explore a new dimension of his abilities.

Sorry, I love Edgar, and I think he definitely had Penn's number, but this I'm really not sure about.

 

Seems like he fell in love with his boixng like Rampage.

 

Alot of Mixed Martial Artists do this. To be honest it gets on my nerves. Stick to what your good at.

Lawal done this with Feijao. Soko does it all the time and is like a beetle on his back despite being a US open champion in Judo. When was the last time you saw Rampages wrestling? Rampages game is so basic these days he'd actually be better off in a boxing ring. He throws hardly any low kicks, you certainly wont see him shoot and his offensive arsenal is restricted to just punches and some dirty boxing.

 

I dont believe 100% in fighters having the number of other fighters in the sense that the lesser fighter will win every time out due to styles but there is something in it in a lot of cases... its really not like Penn to lose to a LW - ANY LW for that matter, I mean, this guy dominated & choked out Gomi when the Japanese were calling Gomi the best LW possibly ever & has defeated comfortably a who`s who of the LW division over many yrs cementing his place as the best ever in that class.... I take nothing away from Edgar but everything points to BJ being on the slide.

BJ's not on the slide. Edgar was just better than him and BJ couldnt adjust. Simple.

 

There is a fire missing that probably went away with his 20's, but he is not shot.

Edgar has a style that troubles Penn. I thought Penn won the first fight. I think Edgar dominated the rematch so much that if Penn were to win the rubber match it would still seem even.

When referencing a rubber match, I'm speaking unofficially of course.

I'm the biggest BJ fan in this forum and I agree. Only redemption for BJ is for Maynard to somehow beat Edgar and he regains the title from Gray.

I must admit, his aura dimmed abit these last two fights.
