Penn looked so fit & strong last night - should he stay at 170 or not?

    Congratulations to BJ, one of my favourite fighters of all-time and a true MMA ATG.

    Sadness for Matt Hughes, another genuine MMA great, I hope he does the right thing for himself now, whether that is continuing to fight or not.


    Anyway, to me BJ's physique looked better than it has for a long time, he looked more motivated and more mentally tuned in than he has for a long time, and his celebration showed he is as passionate about fighting and winning as he ever has been.

    It was a fantastic comeback from two losses (well, really only one, but hey).


    But this now raises the question, did BJ look so much better because he didn't have to cut weight, and should he now stay at 170?

    A fighter with Frankie Edgar's (boring) mix of sharp point-scoring punching and good wrestling ability will probably always present stylistic difficulties for BJ, and even though I fully expect Gray Maynard to dominate Edgar again, the little man is not going anywhere, he's far too small for 170 and I doubt he'd want to go back to cutting to 145.


    But do you think BJ, being small for a welterweight, could actually have a successful career at 170?

    To me, BJ seems a born winner, I do not believe he would stay in a division without trying to challenge for the title. But is he really big enough to compete with massive welterweight wrestlers like Fitch, Koscheck, and of course, GSP???


    Personally, I think a Penn vs Jake Shields fight would be a good match-up. I know Dana has already said Shields is next in line to face the GSP-Koscheck winner, but he has overturned guys' number 1 contender status numerous times in the past. Shields didn't look too hot at 170 vs Kampmann, this fight could be the perfect way to see who is real at welter between BJ and Shields.

    Still a good win though dont get me wrong
    And I agree with BJ v Jake too

    Penn was downright scary, I find it so strange how he can come in like a bag of **** sometimes but just be thunderous and unstoppable other times. He took Matt Hughes the **** out, and that's not as easy as some people think it is.

    If Penn beats Fitch (Which I doubt) he will be right in line for a title shot. Or they will give him alves, while shields fights the winner of gsp/kos

    I'm glad BJ won, but there shouldn't be too much stock placed on this win. The only question going in which made it interesting was if BJ totally checked out from the sport, he didn't and he completely destroyed Hughes who hasn't been relevant since his win over BJ in 2006.

    Penn's always been like that. Dudes INSANELY talented when he's focused. Much like a focused CC the guys just unstoppable when he's on.

    I've barely seen him like that, despite first watching Penn **** Florian. Penn started off in my imagination as untouchable, then got ****ed up by Edgar (Twice, in my opinion) only to come back like a ****ing mad man against Hughes. That entrance I was just like "****. Is going. Down."

    Stay at 170. He can't beat Frankie Edgar any more. The kid is just too fast and too good for Penn at this stage of their respective careers.

    Yep, all his usual ****. But he was just walking with a ****ing purpose, cursing all the way to the ring, motivated as hell. Then when he won he did the usual "run out the ring" ****, awesome classic BJ Penn.

    Frankie Edgar is not too good for BJ Penn.

    Penn beat him, and then in the rematch Edgar dominated a possibly demotivated and weight-drained BJ (ie to me BJ looked in far better physical shape and far more motivated at ww last night).

    In saying that, I do agree with you that BJ would always struggle against Edgar, but that is because of a stylistic difference, not because one fighter is a much higher level fighter than the other.

    Rampage beat Chuck twice convincingly, but that doesn't mean Rampage is "too good". Liddell was a better fighter than Rampage was IMO, but the way their styles meshed was in Rampage's favour.

    That seems to be the case with BJ and Edgar, but Edgar will never, ever come close to BJ's MMA achievements, he will never be "too good" compared to a guy who held UFC titles at two weights, beat a prime Matt Hughes, and took GSP to a close decision in GSP's division.

    Gray Maynard is going to 'bully' Edgar, and remove the little man from the title scene for now anyway. :good

    Edgar dominated him in the rematch you said it yourself. I thought Penn won the first fight - but he clearly lost the second. Time to move on. Edgar has his number.

    I'm not ready to get too excited about Penn at welterweight just yet based on him beating Matt Hughes. Penn can punch, Hughes has shitty standup. Remember that's what got Matt in trouble in their first fight.
    Factor in that Hughes is older, and obviously not the dominant force he once was and last night's result isn't all that shocking.
    I'm glad Penn is immediately facing a top welterweight in Fitch, though. That'll be more telling about his future at 170.

    He should just stay at 170. He can't beat edgar at 155. There are better challenge for him at 170. I like to see him fight fitch, alves-condit etc
