Aoki is a better MMA submission artist, as he relies on his ground game a lot more than Penn does(it's all he has). Penn, in reality, is the better, more effective grappler and the better overall fighter.

All Aoki`s got is a crazy ground game. On the mat they would cancel each other out. But Penn is by far the more versatile fighter who`s standup is light years ahead of Aoki`s. Id love to see them in a pure grappling match though.

Penn is probably still better as a pure grappler as well. Aoki is fantastic, but looks better in an MMA environment than when faced with top notch grapplers in pure grappling contests.

Aoki against one of the world's best pure grapplers, Marcelo Garcia.

If it goes to the ground I would pick aoki but if penn can keep it standing I'd say he'd knock aoki out

Penn' the better ground fighter, by a wide margin, Aoki is better at putting on subs, especially odd ones.

Penn is miles better at takedowns, control, takedown defense, ground and pound, all the aspects of grappling other than subs I would say.

He'd beat Aoki on the ground as well.

sidenote: Aoki kissed his opponent on the left cheek during the fight. Taking into account the fluorescent color of his tights, I found this rather noteworthy.

Aoki's got the cool subs, but basics work best and Penn has them in spades. Also, I would be curious to see how Aoki would do without the pants. They obviously aid him in his grappling game.

penn doesnt need to use his submission game the way aoki does cause he has good striking and takedowns, and his style of jiu jitsu (when he adapted it to mma) utilizes more of a top game...aoki just pulls guard and attacks subs because thats all he's got, remember penn won the world championships of brazilian jjiu jitsu, all they do is pull guard and attack submissions he could do it if he had to but he doesnt he has an all around game

Aoki has already said the pants are what give him an added advntage hence why he always grapples with them. His a bit 1 dimensional though.

Amazing how much that one dimension has taken him in today's MMA game though. I'd say he's the best one-dimensional fighter we've seen aside from probably a prime Hughes.

Agreed. But the dimension he has isnt as good as Hughes.
