The UFC have revealed the date of the superfight fans have been waiting for: Georges St Pierre will face BJ Penn at UFC 93 on January 31. UFC president Dana White spoke to Yahoo! Sports to confirm the mouthwatering clash - a rematch of a previous 170-pound bout in 2006 which St. Pierre won by split decision - will be for St Pierre's welterweight title. The fight was originally slated for December 27, but Canadian star GSP wanted to take a break after fighting four times in the last 12 months. The new date and location for the fight will be at the UFC's annual Super Bowl-weekend event in Las Vegas. Penn will retain his lightweight title whatever the result, and is expected to defend it at a later date, probably against the winner of Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson - set for UFC 91 in November. "We have nothing but big fights left for the rest of the year, but this is so crazy because there are so many of them," White said. "We're going to have a retreat on Monday to figure this all out." The UFC's schedule for the rest of the year includes: UFC 88 in Atlanta on September 6; Ultimate Fight Night on September 17 in Omaha; UFC 89 on October 18 in Birmingham, England; UFC 90 on October 25 in Chicago; UFC 91 on November 15 in Portland; The Ultimate Fighter Finale on December 13 in Las Vegas; and UFC 92 on December 27 in Las Vegas. In the UK they can sell that as a main event. It'll be on spike here, so just pretend it's a UFN card and you'll be fine. So what the hell happens if Stevenson beats Florian, Penn crushes him again? He JUST beat the living CRAP out of Stevenson, why do it again? Work Edgar and Maynard or someone in the loop and keep Stevenson out for a while.
Stevenson will never beat Penn, his chin is weak, he is hurt in a lot of fight standing even if he has good boxing.
Bispng - Leben is the main event for UC 89. Just saying. And lets be honest, no one in the UFC lightwieght division is likely to beat Penn. Some may last longer than others but none will actually win. However anything can happen. I personally think Penn should stay at lightweight and clear it out. This match with GSP is good for the fans in the short-term, but long term it could seriouly **** up two divisions.
if GSP win, which I think he is gonna do, you can say adios to his career at 170lbs. I really think he will make his future at 185 mainly because Cote wont be in his path after his lost to Silva but if he lose, he will spend for a couple of other fight at 170lbs, including a rematch vs Penn.
I regard Penn as the better p4p fighter but the size difference vs GSP might be the difference. I believe this will be GSPs toughest fight & if he beats BJ then it will likely be by close decision where as I can see Penn winning all 3 ways (pts, sub, tko) I want Penn to win - I have a feeling that 1 of these scenarios will unfold - GSP by dec or Penn by submission late on. Cant wait.
Id hardly say his chin is weak. That guy took his lumps vs BJ like a stud. BJ is just far superior in all aspects of MMA than Joe.
Really glad this fight is happening. Anyone bothering to go to 89? I thought about it but the lack of a big name put me off. I'll wait till next time.
What on earth for? If i want to watch Bisping Leben i can see that crap for free from my porch on a Friday night.
Well, he was hurt vs Jason Von Flue, vs Luke Cummo..They arent big puncher. His chin is not weak like James Thompson, but it's definatly not good.
