Penn vs Sheilds in Hawaii , then off into the sunset for Mr Penn ....

I'd rather him fight someone without such a strong game plan yet still dangerous like Alves or Kampman.

 

I've got a feeling if GSP beats Shields both of them will move up in weight. Shields looked far from great in his last fight against Kampmann and was supposed to have really struggled with the cut.

 

I really don't understand your pessimism here.

I am a Penn fan too, and I scored the fight 28-28 (10-9 BJ, 10-9 BJ, 10-8 Fitch)... which for me is a major achievement, because:

- top natural welters such as Alves, Thiago and Gono have been struggling to even wins rounds against him

- I expected Fitch to win pretty clearly, and he didn't over the 3 rounds


When you consider the very apparent height and weight advantages Fitch had in the cage, I think BJ's performance in the first 2 rounds was pretty special.

Consider this - when Anderson Silva goes up to lhw, he doesn't fight the best. And GSP doesn't even go up to mw. Penn has now went up and fought arguably the best three welters in UFC history - Hughes, GSP and Fitch, and has really only been crushed once in all those fights, GSP II.


Of course BJ was downcast after the fight, he had just taken an absolute pounding for 3 minutes. You can't be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed after that, it's not possible.

However, that doesn't change the fact that BJ was excellent (and better than most of us thought he would be) for 2 rounds out of the 3.

And when BJ reviews the footage, he will see that for himself. :good

You bet I wouldn't.

But that doesn't mean I hope he retires. The man is 32. He has at least another good year or two yet.

His skillset was immense in the first two, taking Fitch down and almost getting the RNC in round 2. You can't chuck it all in after that, because a massive wrestler got the grind on him in round 3, the same thing that Fitch does to all natural welters other than GSP.



In saying that, I do really like the idea of a UFC in Hawaii, and I do really like the idea of Jake Shields as the opponent.

But I also like the thought of BJ fighting Gray Maynard, Dennis Siver, Clay Guida and Anthony Pettis.

If Maynard beats Edgar, I expect Edgar to drop down to 145. That would legitimize BJ as a lightweight contender again. Even if Edgar wins, there are still good fights for BJ at 155.

He showed me enough in the Fitch fight to keep me believing in The Prodigy. Believe!!

 

I wouldn't mind seeing shields vs penn. If fitch-penn would have been a 5 rounder, i think penn could have pull it off with a decision win.

Dude he just "beat" IMO the 2nd best WW in the world, and he weighed in at 167lbs with his jeans and boots on. And you are saying he is done? :nut

He won the first two rounds and any other WW in the world, except GSP, Penn would've finished last night. He's far from done.

 

I thought he looked pretty good vs Fitch, he`s just too small & he was simply overpowered in the last rd, he did well the 1st two rds tho.

If I were BJ Id fight Edgar again but this time just go for the fkn TD repeatedly until he gets it & submit that little *****, if he can take Fitch down twice he`ll get Edgar there, believe it.

 

What fight were you watching ?

The 4th & 5th rds would likely have seen BJ being stopped IMO, small chance he pulls a sub within those 10 mins but a decision win was never gonna happen.

 

Good post, only disagreement is that I scored it for Fitch, I gave BJ the 1st & Fitch the last 2 rds.

I liked the Pride way of scoring fights better anyway, they judged a fight as an entirety rather than rd by rd, the between rds is just seen as a breather, nothing more, the 1st two rds were close, no-one was dominant but the 3rd was ALL Fitch & on that basis he should have won the fight.

Ps. Penn should fight Edgar IMO, he`s a superior fighter, **** styles, he has enough overall ability to come up with a plan to beat Edgar... go for the TD from the 1st bell & dont stop until he gets it & he will get it eventually (he got Fitch there twice & I dont care if Fitch wasnt expecting it, he did it twice, he`ll get Edgar there too) then submit the little *******.

Yeah. Edgar is too small, compact and explosive. Penn couldn't hold him down.
