and the guy is 37 years old. when athletes age, footspeed is usually the first to go. that is why you see 35 basketball players practically limping from one court to another. volleyball players don't jump as high,. football players tend to use brains rather than speed since he knows that speed is not anymore one of his stregths.

think dlh 1999 vs. 2009. world of difference in terms of footspeed.

He can be a good coach like his brother former 2 division champ Dodie Boy Penalosa who did a good job for Nonito in his last fight.

that's boxing you never know what's gonna happen inside the ring...
and the fact that juanma is younger, bigger and faster than gerry...
he never been KD in his entire carrier...

yea the more you watch this fight the more you realise that JuanMa won this fight on his physical gifts, but in terms of technical skill Gerry had the upper hand by far. If I was JuanMa's trainer i would have him sparring with Penalosa to improve as a figher especially since both are southpaws..

A quick gif for the guy who said Penalosa only had a right hook.

    theres alot more of those.

Sky is the limit for Lopez though. He is still young and already an incredible fighter.

"Masterful Boxer" is a definite overstatement.

A "masterful boxer" does not lose so against non-descript opposition.

Let's just say Penalosa is a very savvy veteran and leave it at that!

He's very good with his particular style, but I wouldn't call him a master boxer.

Penalosa has never been in with a master boxer. I remember seeing him in with straight up and down, but uses his height wisely, Gonzales, and Penalosa was getting whitewashed until he unloaded that one punch KO.

A lot of these guys today's are not good boxers, but good fighters. They use the typical hands up defense, and are very straight up and down.

JML equivocates this as he's a guy who throws hard, compact punches, but as far as his head movement is concerned and his overall stance, he's somewhat ordinary.

But he's an extraordinary athlete for his size.

i completely agree. IMO penalosa lost simply due to his size disadvantage. JML was able to walk through Pena's counterpunches and pena simply could not earm JMLs respect, and so ended up rolling with and catching nearly all of JMLs shots, reverting to what seemed to be a 'wait till he gets tired' tactic.

OP, during the fight i was thinking the same thing; penalosas evasiveness and cathing/rolling is something i deem as great boxing skill, not to mention his counters. he just had a lack of power/size/age disadvantage which is pivotal these days, IMO
