They said he was exposed, he's a bum, blasse-blasse-blaz, but the fact is he had a real good career (and yes, I'm talking about him in the past tense). Won't be in the HOF but will certainly be nominated. That's pretty good. There is one thing here that the newbies just don't get; he's old! 35 years is about what you get in boxing (or 15 years as a pro, whichever comes first). The skills generally go into decline at 33. A great fighter can prolong it to about 37. There are a few outliers like Paq, Stevenson and of course Hopkins and Archie Moore was in a class by themselves, but as a general rule of thumb it is 35. That does not mean that his drinking and lack of training did not exacerbate his decline, but he was ripe for the taking. Alvarez is 34 but he seems a solid, devoted pro, as opposed to his adversary, no matter, you can measure his title reign with a calendar. I don't think he'll make it long. Kovey always had a couple of flaws, like glass ribs and lack of a plan B., and he was a nine-round fighter, who aged into a 6 round fighter, but he was definitely good in his prime. Nobody else has done that to Pascal. Funny thing is, If I wanted to, he could squeeze another good year or two out of the old body, If I were him I would eat a whole factory of humble pie and beg Jackson to take me back, he looked best with him, then target all of the other guys in the LWHT division around my age, Stevenson, Jack, Beterbeiev and Alvarez again. I don't think he'd win any of those, except the rematch, but he'd be in the ballpark , and Stevenson is 40 years old. Even now, if he got serious I think he'd be 50/50 with Browne, and about 30/70 with Gvozdyk (in the Ukranian's favor). If the guy could leay off the booze for a year, who knows, 3-4 more big money fights.
Good one slender4. I hate hardcore fans for this kind of bitchassness. They are so addicted to bickering about who is winning and whatnot that they can't just enjoy the sport. MMA had turned into a sissy fest like boxing until people like Rousey , Miocic and McGregor started losing then it calmed down. It's better with the casuals they ate not as emotionally invested in punk ****.
He had a great career and oddly enough will probably be remembered for his loss to Ward in that first fight,he boxed so well that night albeit fading later on but in most folks opinion did enough to win. I think that loss finished him as mentally he knew he performed well and you could see after that the fire had gone out nd was quick to give up regardless of low punches. At his best his nickname the Krusher was very apt and let’s be honest we all need to stop judging careers by Floyds standards, losing a few fights at 34 and 35 is no big deal.
Yup. I mean, these guys have promoters, and it is a promoter's JOB to hype his fighters above their ability. That sells tickets. But it isn't the fan's job to go for it.
He proved in the 1st Ward fight he was very good. Actually, the second fight was pretty damn close up until the low blows started taking a toll, or the KO, whatever you believe.
Agree with some of this, and its a decent post. Although I still think he has enough to beat Stevenson, especially that decrepit mess that fought Jack. Browne is literally ****, he got dropped and struggled with Lenin Castillo the other day, Kovalev sould still be considered a big favorite there. An Alvarez rematch is 50/50, as would a match against Bivol. I favor Gvozdyk and Beterbiev over him as well. also he should avoid Joe Smith Jr. as crazy as that may seem. And **** JDJ, I'd rather him hook up with Hunter than that sleazy POS.
This is esb, whenever a fighter gets stopped especially 2 times, He has a glass jaw, bum, or overrated, try to deal with it....
Yup that's it. And I really respect fighters. Kovalev for all of his flaws did put his life on the line for our amusment and put on some great, exciting fights. That's all I need.
They are being hard on him, but at the same time he sure had an attitude with Ward and called him Son of Judges and never gave him credit at all, and seemed to want to make all the excuses for those fights and not taking responsibility for anything. He was hard on his opponents and didn't give much credit either so, he is feeling the roughness which he gave to his opponents and not get the credit probably will think he deserves. Boxing is a tough sport. He did great. Had a great time on top considering I think that he was a rather limited hard puncher who overwhelmed guys, but didn't have the best defensive skills.
