I thought he looked better vs. Karrass. He was doubling up with the right hand, a lot of clever stuff like that. Karrass is good too, a bit like Margarito but not as strong and tough. He may have beaten Gomez had that fight continued.

It's easy to get absorbed into a fight to the point where you're actually believing the showtime bias commentators opinions. When they talk loudly over the fight you're basically watching it from their perspective.

It's best sometimes to turn the commentary off.

Karass was done before he went in with Maidana. He picked up two wins against ordinary opponents, after being stopped by Gabriel Rosado previously.

He also went down to the 140s then shot back upto 157 on fight night. He didn't use his height and reach advantage like he should of. It's not abnormal but he wasn't the same Karass.

I think losing twice to Mike Jones, and then being stopped for the first time in his career was tough on him.

He was then a perfect opponent to be fed to Maidana.

    1) Maidana is overrated, and his "improved boxing skills" do need to be taken with a grain of salt despite him making some headway.

    2) JSK is absolutely not garbage. He's never been a world-beater, but he's a very high-level gatekeeper. When he's up for it he can give anybody out there a rough test.

The Karass of the Maidana fight was not the same of old. Garbage is too strong of a word but i do feel he's pretty much done against Mike Jones type opponents.

The Mike Jones controversy, then being stopped,....etc... The best i saw him was around the time he fought Carson Jones and David Estrada. He's been around forever.

I guess he can bounce back again.

He has indeed been around a while, and he's been consistently inconsistent the last decade. This has of course made it incredibly frustrating to be a fan of his, which I am :yep (probably his oldest and most ardent one on ESB, having tracked more or less his entire televised portion of his career dating back to Fox Deportes undercards when he was a green unbeaten prospect)

It isn't a matter of a lineal slope. It isn't like he was a serviceable fighter and now he's done. He's hot and cold, and always has been. His dedication waffles like crazy. That isn't to say that if he'd ever held it together mentally he could have been more than he is/was (a top contender) and had a title reign or anything - but during his "on" nights he's a maniac and hell to compete against in all the same ways prime Margarito was.

Gomez ended his last high-quality run and began a rather poor streak (outside of Jones I, which he deserved) but heading in against Maidana he'd put a couple of solid rebound performances under his belt and was more or less right back where he'd been from 2007-2009.

He looked no worse for the first several rounds against Maidana than he did in any of his career-best victories. This wasn't some shot, weak sitting duck just taking a licking. He was as game as they come and for a stretch there had a lot of people convinced watching live that he might spring the upset. Maidana may not be a massive hitter at welter, but Jesus was eating his punches like candy for a while.

To stop him - even now in 2012 - is a VERY noteworthy achievement, and there's a reason both Gabe Rosado and Maidana get loads of credit for doing it. This guy isn't double-tough, he's ****ing quadruple-tough...and against Maidana you could quite clearly see that this was the motivated, focused, ready-to-rumble version of JSK. (probably more so in fact than against Rosado, where he just looked sort of flat and lacking in confidence from the opening bell).

Always liked Maidana, really exciting guy, I dont overrate him though, he isnt elite nor the best argentinian boxer in that weight category but he is very fun to watch.

I think this is an interesting post. Most interesting is the term "he'd still find a way". For me Maidana didnt look like he had improved a whole bunch either. But as this guy has pointed out he will hold his own in the majority of situations due to his will. He wills himself into fights with guys much much better than him. This is also interesting because i feel that when he is in with a guy like soto-karass people are expecting him to do a much better job because of how well he has done against higher level oposition. The thing is though he isnt leaps and bounds ahead of anyone really in talent so he will have a hard nights work against most fighters from moderate level on. So to those saying he didnt look as good in the karass fight as certain people are saying I agree but i didnt expect him too, i knew he would make it hard for himself, but next time he is in deep against someone better he will likely make it very hard for them too. When you are all will and little skill you will have to work hard against everyone. One month he might go life and death with a low level opponent and the next he might beat a contender.

One of his amateur bouts with Matthysse...all of which were razor thin (three wins and a draw, I believe? Or 2W 2D, something along those lines)

Wow that picture of Mattysse Maidana is GOLD.

I wasn't fooled by Maidana's last performance. It was one of his best performances. Showed skills he has never used or knew before.

i've been saying this since the night he fought soto karass. Not saying exactly that SK is garbage, but a very limited fighter with a decent chin.Maidana doesnt belong to 147...and still people talking about fighting Canelo at 154, wtf
