People have went on longer undefeated streaks than 49 so why is that historical?

JCC, Robinson, Macfarland(twice) etc. it's probably considered history because of the amount of world champions that floyd was able to defeat. i mention this in every thread that gives floyd credit for beating the most world champions: the current era gives world titles out like they're candy.. if guys like paulie malignaggi(wtf?), and victor ortiz can be world champions then what does that tell you about the talent pool of the modern era?

because he's still undefeated, if he were to lose before he retires like the other mentioned fighters his win streak would be less regarded.

To be honest, I agree, it's like Max Kellerman said, just because some guys continued to fight on after 49-0 doesn't erase that achievement, I think the record itself is stupid.

This is an important US record. Mayweather, many boxing experts, and the highest paying fans all coming from the US makes the record important to US citizens. However, the record has been broken many times by fighters outside of the US.

Robinson did not break the record, he was 40-0 before his first loss to LaMotta. However he went on to win 88 bouts before his next loss (2 draws and a NC).

JCC ws 87-0 before his first draw with Whitaker and 89-0-1 before his first loss to Randall. Lopez was 47-0 before his first draw and 51-0-1 overall.

I think its more important then Chavez' record simply because Chavez won his first world title when he was 44-0 , 5 fights after he broke the record, but Floyd has been champion since 18-0, and has been champion ever since.. Thats historical right there in its own right.

Yep and if Floyd fought a Berto once a year he'd be undefeated for about 60 fights and people would be complaining even more.

So we probably won't see eye to eye on this because of style clashes, but I happen to be a fan of both. If you look at their championship records Chavez has a record of 31-4-2 (21 KOs) in world title fights, more victories than any other world champion in history. Mayweather is also impressive at 25-0 (10 KOs) in world title fights, but is 6 fights short of breaking Chavez record in regards to victories.

I'd like to see a comprehensive list of world title records, as I'm sure Chavez and Mayweather are among the best. Whereas what I do know is that:

DelaHoya stands at 24-5 (17 KO)
    Pacquiao 18-3-2 (8 KOs)
    Hopkins 24-5-2, 2NC (13 KOs)
    Leonard 10-2-1 (8 KOs)
    Hearns 15-4-1 (9 KOs)
    Hagler 13-1-1 (12 KOs)
