The Pavlik fight was there to be made.

Yet he gave Roy a 50-50 deal, AFTER saying that the fight would be pointless, as Roy was shot and had been for years.

    There’s your ATG.

Anyone who know anything about Joe Calzaghes career knows after the Kessler fight retirement was looming large as he was old and having trouble making weight @168lbs so he chose to take two cash grab fights in the states at 175lbs v Hopkins & Jones Jr as they were still massive ppv draws in the states , so he took them instead of Kelly ( bit of a no brainer really from a business point of view ) surely you can under$and that ?

Btw I do agree Roy was shot .

Roy was past shot, the man was getting knocked left and right for 4 years prior to fighting Joe. Why didn't Joe fight Dawson? Tarver? Johnson? Instead he fought two men who nearly 90 combined in age in those last two fights. Joe only found his passport when Roy Jones was decrepid.

It wasn’t a no brainer though.

Because a Pavlik fight would have done great PPV.

Built up as two undefeated fighters.

And he would never have had to have given Kelly a 50-50 deal.

I’ll post you an interview that you may or may not have seen.

Forget the video mate i know what I know , after becoming the undisputed 168lbs champion of the world he either did what was best for him or keep fighting @ 168 , you can't seriously be saying the Kelly Pavlik fight ( BIG fan of Kelly myself) would have earned him anywhere near the sort of sausage the two fights he had over in America did .

    That’s exactly what I’m saying.

Coming off of the Hopkins win, against an undefeated Pavlik, coming off of the Taylor win.

And he’d have had a far bigger share.

Gary Shaw wanted it. Kelly wanted it. HBO wanted it.

Joe himself said he wanted it.

Then he changed his mind. But he’d already dismissed Roy publicly on two occasions at that point.

Also, it didn’t have to be at 168.

It could have been at a catch-weight, like the Hopkins fight.

Nah catchweight wouldn't have worked he was struggling to make 168lbs any lower wouldn have been unattainable imo , personally i think he did the right thing for himself and his family because if he would have done the Kelly fight Mr Froch would have been stamping his feet for a go on the shows , boxing is a business as well as a sport, Joe cleaned up in both departments, ie he was universally recognised as the best 168lb'r on the planet and retired with generatinal wealth for his family .

    I’m talking about a catch-weight above 168.

    Like for the Hopkins fight.

The Hopkins fight was a catch-weight.

Hopkins fought Kelly at a 170 pound catch-weight.

    Watch this.

    It’s only on 2 mins.
