i'm guessing this is pointless, but i'll try. To say a fighter has a plan b or c, or d. Is referring to his ability to adjust to a scenario or fighter to make his attack/defense more effective. Of course he either uses his shoulder roll, or high guard, he also fights with his hands to his sides if he feels his opponent can do nothing about it. But then every... EVERY fighter uses their "style of defense or offense. Again, no fighter would be versatile using the examples that you are. May is that most apt of boxers now to change w/in his available parameters so to speak. Example. rd 2 of Mosely upto this point he is mostly using the shoulder roll defense, but he gets caught with a great punch and hurt. After clearing his head by holding he immediately switches to high guard, it didnt happen again to him in that fight because Mosley gassed, it didnt happen because May changed the landscape, and didnt allow that punch to be available again. Comprende???

Well if Pac and Roach take this approach to floyd just as you have, pac will get soundly beaten !

The Original poster ****ysis is very good, but the big mistake he is making is that he's thinking size is the only tool for bullying a fighter, which is not true. pacquiao workrate is what made him the bully against the bigger fighters. Mayweather has had problems with bigger fighters because they were able to put him on the ropes where Mayweather's workrate dropped and they were able to get some big punches off, but in the end Mayweather's boxing intelligence and skills takes over. With Pacquiao though, is that Mayweather might have problems with the workrate because Floyd doesn't throw punches in bunches like he used to, in this fight he'll probably be forced to throw more otherwise he could lose by decision. The big problem for Pacquiao is that he's had problems with counter punchers and the reason why is because he doesn't cut the ring off too well, he chases, so in the end he gets hit with a big shotwhere he over extends with his own punch. It's going to be a great fight because both have weaknesses that the other boxer can expose. It's a very hard fight to predict. I certainly won't be betting on it.

I like your thinking here. Good debatable points. My rebutt to this would be that, and compubox stats back up. Every Mayweather opponent historically throws fewer punches when they fought him. In addition, Pacquiao's Punch output has been historically lower when facing movement/counter-punching. I get where youo are coming from though.

Pacquiao's punch output will be lower against Mayweather than he was against other opponents and the reason why is because he's got to get to Mayweather first and then even when he's done that, he's got to actually connect, which is not easy. When you face a slickster, a coaches advice is to always cut the ring down and get that slickster on the ropes, but what makes floyd so special, is that he's also good on the ropes, which now makes the task double as hard.

The problem for mayweather is what happens if Pacquiao does get him on the ropes, because floyd does back on the ropes quite easily now, is that Pacquiao might just outwork him. Pacquiao might not land, but the workrate doesn't allow floyd to throw back as much as he would normally because of fear of leaving himself open if Pacquiao is throwing 2-3 punches for every punch Floyd throws. Floyd biggest advantage is defense, but this could be his biggest weakness for this fight.

With that being said. I can however see a scenario where Roach's "secret" gameplan is to have Pacquiao throw caution to the wind and jump on him ala the way he did ODLH, and if what Roach feels is correct, this may be effective. What if it's not though. Again Roach fighters aren't known for their ability to adjust. What if Pacquiao starts getting tagged coming in from the offset??

Overall though, I would make Floyd the favourite. Manny has had problems with counter punchers, and floyd is the best counter puncher. Floyd just has to up his workrate a bit more and this might be the fight where Floyd really shows what he can do. Like I said, we'll have to see what happens. Certainly an intriguing fight.

Good points. This is very much along the lines of what Atlas has been saying. Floyd going into that defensive shell. If Manny is successful at that, he had better keep his distance though. Floyd is a little more adept at infighting than he is.

Pacquiao doesn't seem the fighter that gets bothered about getting tagged. Actually, Pacquiao seems to hype himself up when he gets tagged. Floyd has a better recovery rate though. Floyd's legs are going, but his recovery rate has helped him.

It's just a very hard fight to predict because it's one of those fights where they both have the strengths that expose their opponents weaknesses. You normally don't get a fight like that. It's now a case of who is able to use their strengths more. It'll probably be Floyd, but If there was one boxer that could expose floyd's weakness, which is workrate, it's Pacquiao. I can't wait. A true great boxing match that will be talked about in decades to come.

Has Manny really had problems with counter punchers? He has had problems with one specific counter puncher.

Next to JMM the next best counter puncher he has faced was MAB and he ****ing destroyed MAB.

The point of this thread is that there is a misconception that Floyd has trouble with southpaws when he actually had trouble with one southpaw for 4 rounds. I would actually say the the Floyd has trouble with southpaws is really Floyd has trouble with a good left hand but that is beside the point.

Doesn't the same apply to Pac then? There is a perception that Manny has trouble with counter punchers when the truth is he has had trouble with one counter puncher and his record as a whole shows no trouble with counter punchers.

Clottey thought he had a real chance because Manny has trouble with counter punchers.

Algeri thought he had a real chance because Manny has trouble with counter punchers.

The next time you feel compelled to say Manny has trouble with counter punchers stop and correct yourself. Manny has trouble with Juan Manuel Marquez. That is all his boxing history tells us.

I like the way you approached your ****ysis, but here is where I feel you're wrong. The common denominator from the southpaws is that they were able to penentrate Floyd's defense more than expected. Pacquiao is on a different level than all the southpaws you mentioned, and is naturally a very unique phenomenon.

In regards to the fighters you mentioned that have given Floyd more problems... there's more than one way to skin a cat. Big pressure fighters are a lot more common than unorthodox in and out speedsters with solid punch and high activity. Therfore it's understandable Floyd has ran into higher quality pressure fighters than southpaws with similar attributes to Pacquiao.

The main difference is the quality of Pacquiao along with his style. But the same goes for Pacquiao against Floyd. I used to think that I would favor Floyd once this fight got made, but now that it's official I'm leaning towards Pacquiao.

Clottey is not a counter-puncher, Algieri you didn't seriously mention his name, did you. And if i remember correctly MAB also beat Manny or was that Erik Morales also a good counter-puncher (look it up) and that one counter-puncher gave him trouble for 4 fights not 4 rounds, he also knocked him until the middle of next century. I do think of these things before i post. You obviously didn't.
