"early" just means the first round to you? Clottey didn't throw many punches to begin with. I'm saying the punches that Clottey landed in the earlier rounds were the cleanest punches of the two and it was before Pac was "allowing himself" to get hit.
You're missing the point completely. Nobody is saying that everytime Clottey landed, it was because Pacquiao just stood there, but there was a change in his defence after he basically won the fight. After that, he did allow some shots to set up his own counters. Early in the fight, his defence was actually really good and late on, he took too many shots but I don't think he was trying to avoid everything late on, instead, he was focusing on picking his own punches and going in for the kill. This was similar to rope-a-dope, where Ali let Foreman land his huge bodyshots, to tire him out, or more recently and appropriately, Pacquiao/Cotto, like I said. Pacquiao made Cotto gun shy.
And if he did counter him at that point, clottey would have further gone into his shell. Pacquiao wanted clottey to consistently open up and make him feel confident in doing so.
It was annoying to me that instead of crediting Joshua Clottey for what shots he did land, we simply claim that Pacquiao allowed it all to happen. Perhaps I'll take a step back and hear you all out this time. I concede that Manny may have, down the stretch, perhaps, maybe, took his foot off the gas and waited for an opportunity to counter. That being said, the punches that were most evident to me besides the uppercuts were the lead right hands early...which Manny didn't want any part of, of which I'm certain.
I cosign this to the T. The early shots were not shots Pac was just "letting happen". the later shots, sure. There were a couple of occasions where Clottey knocked Pac back enough to followup with a couple more shots and he didn't do it. It was ridiculous considering Pac's biggest weakness if fighting going backward.
:good my bad, i did completely miss the point. thanks for clearing it up. I didnt get to watch the full fight but i'll catch it sat to see what you were talking about.
he ate right hands not by choice...but the uppercuts he got were intentional when he stood infront of clottey...part of me thinks it wasnt for clottey to open up but more for pac to see how hard of a punch he cn really take
I just rewatched the first round.. Clottey countered him like 3 times and led with the right and landed almost every shot but a few.. The commentators seen it and said it... The question is what the **** were you watching?
Wow you are an idiot! Yeah he WANTED to get his face swollen up. If it was a ploy he would have slipped the incoming shots no less than 60% of the time and returned with something. Instead he just ate the shot. He rarely landed counters. What fight did you watch? :huh
Huh? Man no fighter in his right mind "tests" a guys power by eating uppercuts! Maybe a jab. Maybe a slightly out of range straight or hook on the gloves. NO MAN eats a solid uppercut on purpose. :nono Where do you guys get this stuff?
I was a bit frustrated at Pac's inability to counter very well. The handful of punches that Clottey managed to land, Pac wasn't even to counter most of them.
