I like Calzaghe a lot. He's the best at 168 and when he moved up to 175, he beat both the GOAT Hopkins and Roy Jones jr. Wow...that was so incredible. I think that Calzaghe will beat SOG if they both meet prime for prime.

His record speaks for itself, I am sure a bunch of keyboard warriors is not going to bother Joe too much, or indeed any champion boxer.

 

This is an excerpt from his autobiography - 'No Ordinary Joe' published a year before they fought in 2007:

"I have no interest anymore in Roy Jones and no interest in Antonio Tarver. Jones is washed up and Tarver was never that good anyway. He just caught Jones when Jones was shot and Johnson did the same"

 

That's correct, he was referring to fighting Jones when Jones waa done.
Calzaghe then faded and it was more even then.
Watched a documentary and interview with Frank Warren explaining how it was frustrating to match Joe against Roy in the 90s and despite nearly getting it over the line that the Levins were stringing them along.

 

I couldn't agree more. Great fighter, I thought he had atleast 1 or 2 more fights in him.

Great fighter, had a lot of good attributes did joe, very adaptable, not a lot of fighters can adapt really well in fight. That's the difference between mediocre and great fighters imo, I believe joe would have found a way to beat anyone put in front of him.

And to think his dad had no experience and to where they went from that little shed in newbridge. Wow!

Inspiring, legendary stuff.

Credit for what?

Beating 39yo Twice KOed Jones, Who had one eye during most of the fight?
Beating 43yo Hopkins, In a somewhat close fight?
Exposing Jeff Lacy?
Being one of/the best in a relatively weak division?

Not to be negative, because he was a respectable fighter, but I hope we are not pretending he is a big ATG or anything here.

 

His list of opponents is some of the worst ever in a title reign Ashira, Salem, Thornberry, Sobot, Pudwill, Mkrtchyan, Manfredo, Jimenez, McIntyre.

And guys like Starie, Sheika, are not exactly setting world a light either, aswell as rematching Veit twice after he already stopped him in 1 round first rime.

And then some of his better wins like....

Brewer = Coming off a loss to Echols.

Reid = Coming off an abysmal performance losing to 40 year old Malinga.

Woodhall = Coming off losing to Beyer in which he got dropped 3 times by the light hitting Beyer.

Eubank = Scheduled to fight at Light Heavyweight, was a replacement and had to drop down to Super Middleweight in 11 days.

No doubt Calzaghe had skills and talent, but his opposition was mehhh. I'm not saying its all his fault and its unfortunate he came along after Eubank, Benn, Watson, etc. And then retired before Super Six Super Middleweight tournament, but still his opponents during his reign were largely against forgettable opposition.

 

Just look at who Jones beat and when he beat them in all the different divisions over the years and then look at Calzaghe’s career,no comparison ! There are a few fighters in that era who could have gone unbeaten facing the fighters that Calzaghe did during his career. Did Calzaghe do well,yes he certainly did but there are other fighters who could have done the same as well .

 

I really rated Calzaghe but I do not get overly concerned if others don’t. Similar posts will be said about Fury, Usyk, Canelo in years to come. Boxing is polarising and some fighters do not get as much respect as others think they should. Although I liked Joe, I wouldn’t say he had a great aura or like ability. His style lacked appeal to some and some of his big wins were against past prime opponents. I think he was special, but I can see why some might not rate him as highly as me.
