The Hw division sucks right now, that is most of the peoples opinion yet there were so many in attendance during the klitscho fight. I think people are hoping for the HW division to be revive again and they think klitscho is the man that will do so.
I don't care a) about the heavyweight division in general, really b) whether there's a great American heavyweight c) about the correlation between the heavyweight division and boxing's status as a mainstream sport. Most of what I like isn't "mainstream" anyway. I kind of like that the sweet science is so out of favor with the unwashed masses and strictly for elitist purists now.
hw will always be the division with the appeal to people in general. casual fans want to see a fight, two big dudes who can hurt each other at any time.
Sorry if I'm a little fired up about the issue, but Larry freaking Merchant (who I generally like, and have gone out of my way to defend in the past) pissed me off bad tonight. In fact, he was a god damn unprofessional SOB and HBO should really censure him or not allow him on any more broadcasts. He was way out of line (not as bad as Teddy Atlas jumping on the ring apron yelling at the ref, but up there). Blatant bias for Thompson (just because he's American) from the pre-fight interview to the TKO aside, almost everything out of Merchant's mouth was bitching and moaning about the lack of American presence in the unlimited ranks. So ****ing what? Comment on the lack of depth in the division in general, on the lack of exciting matchups to be made at the top level, but don't just wax jingoistic lament ad nauseum. Oh, and then there's the part where, I don't know if he was passed out drunk or what, but when Lampley cued him to give a rundown of future Klit opponents and there was 15 seconds of dead air before Jim jumped in to say Merchant's lines for him - at which point Larry grouchily stammered over Jim and rushedthrough it...stressing Arreola of all people. Hyping Chris mother ****ing Arreola as the next Red White & Blue Hope? Are you mother ****ing kidding me, Larry? Take yer next gin and tonic in a sippy cup to go, old timer. You need to be watching the fights from the retirement home.
I dont care about heavyweights. I usually only watch 2 to 3 rounds. Nothing exciting happens and I delete the fight from my dvr. Got the division blows.
:good but, imo, the correlation between the hw div and the boxings status is direct. hw is the flagship division of the sport.
I don't deny that that's true, but it's true only because people are stupid (it really shouldn't be true, in an ideal world...the glamour division should be determined by meritocratic means). I don't think placating the stupid ass KO hungry casual fan (who buys into the myth that only big men have stopping power...like a Zuri Lawrence fight promises more thrills than a Vazquez-Marquez affair ) should be the #1 priority in this sport. Networks shouldn't start to feature HW main events with questionable prospects just because they're HWs...that would be a bad move for the sport. Showing bad talent on main events hurts boxing. Desperate, stupid bids to lure in fans with HW 'talent' can actually result in hurting boxing.
Whats idiotic about wanting to see good fights between people who are, in the absolute sense, the best boxers in the world? At its best, the HW division is at least as good as any other division, just look at how many of the great all time fights are HW fights.
