Alot of boxers fight cause that's all they're good at and it makes money.

But which boxers do you know of that had the potnetial to go on and be succesful in another career but still chose to box anyway?

For example wladimir klitschko has a PHD doesn't he?

exactly, they almost seem too clever to be boxers (i shouldn't generalise i know) which makes you wonder why they have.

Well right now the Klits are doing pretty well. So I'm thinking they were part of that typical rich white family, where the whole family is good at everything

James J Corbett went through hell in the ring on more than one occasion, but at the time he decided to commit himself to boxing he was working on a promising banking career. Guy ended up HW champ for the woirld.

I think pounding fat Americans or plodding Eastern Europeans in the face for ten minutes or so until they fall down pays significantly better than other jobs Wlad could be doing.

Certainly in the UK, most boxers come from a slightly deprived background, obviously there are exceptions, however not many kids with well to do parents, living in plush houses and are well educated, turn to boxing. I can't speak for other nationalities though, but certainly plenty of the top fighters have had some degree of tragedy/poverty in their lives... Which probably goes a long way to building the character that makes them great fighters.

I'm sure plenty boxers would of been good at other sports too like football (soccer and american), basketball, baseball, etc. You tend to find people who are exceptional at one sport, are good at several.

Calvin Brock comes to mind, as the "boxing banker" he had a career already set out for him. Same with Davarryl Williamson who I believe has a degree in something decent as well.

Juan Diaz almost has his law degree. I think I remember hearing Hasim Rahman may've had a good career in football, same with James Toney. Marco Antonio Barrera was pursuing something pretty good too (I think law) before deciding to be a boxer.

A lot of boxers are actually pretty smart guys.

Another good one would be Joe Mesi, who upon leaving boxing has tried to make it into politics.

Oscar de la Hoya. Even if you hate him, you'd have to admit he is clearly an intelligent articulate man who had all ready made millions as a promoter, while he was still risking his life in the ring.
