Pep. Pac is not incapable of causing trouble, but style-wise Pep has this matchup. I already discussed this fight in the classic forum in the below thread. I actually took Pac's side on the debate with Sizzle, who argued it would be a completely one sided stoppage for Pac. I disagreed, but still agreed that Pep wins. Pep. Unless Pac seriously ups his arsenal and uses his right hand more, he'll be favored over by a lot of past fighters.
Pep would be destroyed, he's never seen anything close to someone like Pacquiao in his day. Pac has faced better boxers than Pep, such as Morales/JMM/Barrera. A machine like offensive fighter who fires very accurate, fast, powerful shots that Pep can't deal with. Pep would be able to have some success with countering on paper, since Pacquiao's balance is horrible and it's not very hard to counter him. But Pep would not be able to deal with a modern great like Pac.. no disrespect to Willie Pep, but there simply wasn't anyone half as big of a threat as Pac back then. I don't want to get involved in classic vs modern fighter arguments, but I just wanted to give Pac a little respect here since everyone is picking Pep.
Pac by what can only be described as an easy KO. Pac is faster, more powerful than anything Pep faced. He certainly wouldn't look a defensive genius. Barrera would do him over the worst though, Barrera's perfect equilibrium would expose Pep's technical short comings.
Your post delved a lot deeper into the "classic vs modern" debate than it did a debate between two fighters. The guys you named are better punchers, not more skilled overall boxers. Marquez is a better puncher than any of them, a better technical boxer. Morales is a boxer/brawler, definitely not a better boxer than Pep. Pep was a very unorthodox boxer style-wise, not a pure textbook boxer. If you've seen footage of him, I don't see how you can say he's inferior. He's no Jack Johnson or Bob Fitzsimmons from the dawning of the 20th century, he fought into the 60's. I don't see how you can say Pep wouldn't stand a chance, especially seeing how well someone like Hamed(nowhere near as elusive or slick, though very unorthodox) performs. Straight punching is not the way to beat an upper-body mover like Pep, especially when your balance is as bad as Pacquiao's. Pep was known for having such balance and subtle movements that he would send people through the ropes off misses, making them look like straight up clowns. In fact I've seen it happen. I'm a realist, I accept who's primitive and who's not based on fight footage. I have full confidence that a prime Willie Pep would be special in any era. You'd have to be a top notch pressure fighter to get the job done, or someone who is capable of keeping Pep within your reach. A guy like Sandy Saddler and Sammy Angott had wider punches, punches that would keep a lateral mover like Pep within reach. Though he slipped a lot, he was not able to keep out of range of them. Pacquiao's straight punching and full forward style, with his lack of balance and versatility, is definitely a style that would play into Pep's hands. As far as not having anyone threatening to fight, tell that to Sandy Saddler, Ray Famechon, Chalky Wright, Jackie Graves, Manuel Ortiz, etc. Then again, you likely think they're all inferior. I don't think, if you've seen any Pep footage, you've seen footage of him closer to his prime. Watch this, just bits of him with commentary, but even in this you can see how good he was at using angles, slipping punches, countering, and just using the ring and his extraordinary sense of timing to befuddle other boxers. Pep would move, grove, dip, duck, dodge, bob, weave, side step, feint, and just frustrate Pac to a UD. Pep ,in my opinion, has the best defense in the history of boxing, hell he won a round without throwing a punch, the first and only occurrence in boxing history.
Pac is out of his depth here with one of the best boxers in history. I mean if anyone has a decent shot with his amazing speed and power its Pac but i don't think you can make him a favorite.
This is more of a style issue that one of skill level. Pac simply doesn't have the style to make Pep pay. His style is too rythmic and predictable for Pep's caliber. The perfect foil for pep actually existed in his era in Sandy Saddler. Tall, powerful, rough, good jab, etc.
Pac KO. i dont know how pep would deal with pac's speed, power and punch volume since i've seen him fight only once or twice. he seemed a bit unorthodox as well in the vid with his hands low. pac's speed would allow him to close the distance quickly and exploit it. he had good lateral movement though and would make pac work hard on cutting the ring. i wonder as well how pep would deal with the amount of leather pac throws.
Pac is a straight forward shooter, he is not a multi-dimensional fighter. He can't stand in range and box with Pep, and his forward, straight left style would play into Pep's hands, as that is the least effective style to have against a lateral mover, especially when your balance is as whacked as Pacquiao's. I could see this being a boxing clinic from the side of Pep. What fights have you seen of Pep? I doubt it was a prime(or near) Pep to be honest. There is actually little footage of him in his true prime, but the vid I posted above shows clips of it, and you can see just how talented he was in some of them. His use of angles, lateral movement, feints, and slips are unsurpassed even to this day from what I have seen.
