I think this stylistic matchup actually favours Pac. Pac would eat up all that cutesie stuff Pep throws. Guys who beat Pac are those with good offensive skills as well as countering, guys like JMM who could hurt him and Morales who could outbox and back him up. Pep would literally have to hit and run all night and that will not work against someone who possess incredible combination of explosiveness, speed, power and stamina. Dont forget this was at 126 too where Pac's power was even more devastating than it is now.

Pac's worst nightmare of a fighter IMO is someone like Arguello, a bigger version of Morales. A guy can counter him and KHTFO with 1 punch. A prime Morales would be favourite. PBF at 130 would make easy work. All these guys could hit damm hard, hard enough to stop Pac on his tracks and make him loose confidence in his all out attempt for war.

If a fighter who can use movement and counter-punching to beat Pac is the style to beat him(which I think it is, along with other styles) then it gets no better than Pep. Straight punching is not the way to go against lateral movement, which is why a jab didn't work on a guy like Tyson, who was so good at bobbing and weaving. Pacquiao is a straight forward fighter with a lot less than stellar balance, compared to the sublime balance and use of lateral movement that a prime Pep had. Pac's speed is the only thing that could give Pep trouble, but style-wise Pep has the edge.

No, Peps style would not work in a sense that Pac culd easily bullrush him. With pac's explosiveness and power, it wouldnt be hard. He could not bullrush JMM because JMM has very good combination of offense, so does Morales. Both guys carry alot more power than Pep thus they can stop Pac on his tracks and even back him up. All Pep's cute stuff will do is annoy Pac and Pac will keep on chasing until he does get to him, and he will. You used Tyson as an example, great example cos IMO Tyson is alot like Pac in the way that they both carry great power, speed and explosiveness. The guys who beat Tyson all could hit aswell and have great skills, well atleast buster on the night did. Cute guys like Spinks got eaten up. Cute guys get away with outboxing other outboxers and plodding brawlers, they dont get away with outboxing very explosive brawlers who dont stop punching with trememdous speed.

Have you seen any Pep near his prime, or just clips, bits of him against Saddler, etc?

Tyson was nothing like Pac style-wise other than the fact that both were fast and powerful. Tyson would pick his spots in his prime, and had a great bob and weave defense that he could counter well out of, especially under a jab. Pacquiao, on the other hand, comes forward, mostly with the left straight, at times starting with the right hook. He doesn't often slip punches in range or counter, and he doesn't often box. His style is mostly straight forward.

My stand for Pep is this: Call him cute all you want, he was extremely effective, and even managed to get a win over an ATG who was the foil for him stylistically when past his prime in Sandy Saddler. Saddler would rough Pep up because he would tie him up and keep him in range and within his reach(I've given my views on this earlier, so I won't be repetitive). Pac, on the other hand simply comes forward throwing mostly straight punches. He's shown on more than one occasion that he his balance is off, which wouldn't do wel for him against a skilled bob and weaver with lateral movement. In fact, he would look straight up foolish at times. Someone like Marquez, with a bigger, better, more accurate variety of punches would stand a better chance than Pac, who is limited technically.

To give my exact thoughts on the matchup in a nutshell(as I may seem to be rambling on a bit), I think Pep's lateral movement and defensive slipping skills, reflexes, counter-punching, etc would be a foil for Pac's straight forward, off balance style. That is only sense. Straight forward(especially when you're as wild as Pac) is not the way to go against a mover like Pep. I would call this match as a shutout if not for Pac's speed and tenacity, which could admittedly give Pep trouble, but people also vastly underrate a prime Pep's athleticism and reflexes, too often watching his fights with Saddler or later fights to judge him. Similar to watching Ali vs Norton and comparing that to a young Ali pre exhile.

The more balanced, better boxing Pacman of 2007 would simply shut Pep out.

You think he'd outbox Pep now? I can see how you and Amsterdam consider guys of the 20's and 30's primtive, but not Pep or Robinson. These are guys that fought into the 60's successfully when well past their primes, in the era of guys like Ali, Napoles, Griffith, etc, guys not even you guys could call primitive. They were clearly at their best in the 40's as well. How do you think they managed to keep competitive when well past their primes in a modern era such as the 60's? Do you assume they actually evolved as fighters from the 60's? I hope not, it's clear as day they were not as skilled as in their younger days. I'd like to hear your views on this, and your serious views.
