From watching the film, it does look pretty dramatic, as though he were overacting, but for what it's worth, Pep said these were legitimate knockdowns. He said in his book Friday's Heroes, that he had driven up to New York for the fight from Florida, was not feeling that great, and was caught cold by a good right hand. He said that the third knockdown was from a "going away" right hand, and that he could have continued but for the three knockdown rule.
Interesting one I'll give it a bump. To my eye the last knock down looks really odd This content is protected There was a lot of late money on Perez to the point of shutting down the betting, which also sounds fishy. A few comments of Pep being suspended, but from what I'm reading the reason given was because they thought his punch resistance was gone and he therefore shouldn't be boxing
It does look odd to me too. It seems he throws his head back after the shot was delivered. I mean it is a split second but it does seem from that shot that the result/reaction would have come sooner
Knock downs at 0:37 The first looks pretty normal to me, but not the best angle 1:33 watch it at quater speed, does the knock down punch even land? 2:33 Just bizarre, and not a clean shot either. In my opinion it was more likely a fix.
